Are you excited or nervous?

Nope, Montolivo and Giovinco are :P

Though Aquilani is great, I must agree...bad luck he's not going to Juve :(

it's when it gets to stages like this where now i'm gutted england aren't there all teh fans over there all the excitement that we may win all the press and publicity everyone thinking about england and football and then the disappointment that we fail again, it's all part of being englidh yet alas not this time :(

Pfft, with the quality of football on display, I'm almost glad we didn't get there, instead of us praising good football, we'd have all just been moaning about how poorly we play, and why can't we play like the others do.

I've thoroughly enjoyed these Euros, more so than any major footballing tournament I can remember.

Really? I think some of the defensive displays we've seen from most sides has been nothing short of awful. There have been no events in this competition where i've seen, and been involved in, manic pub-table jumping, spilling drinks over each on a disallowed goal...you're not patriotic enough! ;o)

The counter-attacking football in this competition has been second to none, but it didn't help Portugal did it? Like somebody else said, it's still going to be a boring final participated by probably the 2 best defences in the competition.

Unless you are of Spanish, Hungarian, Italian and Dutch descent then i don't see how this can be the most enjoyable Euros you can remember!
2008-06-20 15:01:58
Hm...Spain ok, Italy ok, Nederland ok...but what's that all about Hungary? :P
2008-06-20 15:04:09
Just a random country, i personally like Venezuela, or Mongolia for random purposes.

When watching neutral games, I'm not really looking for good defending.

Why would the Hungarians have enjoyed it?

The Dutch scoring so many past France and Italy was enjoyable, Russia against Sweden shows just what a good side they are, with 2 really well worked goals.

I guess, the difference is, I really enjoy good team goals, and there have been loads of them, I don't really like people shooting from 40 yards, and the ball changijng direction 10 times, so the keeper can't save it.

The Germans first goal last night, is what I like to define football as, and there has been lots of quick, incisive passing, to feet, and on the ground, perfect football for me.

I fully agree with all that to be honest, it has been enjoyable, and being a supporter of a Non League club i am often very neutral, believe me...but i haven't screamed at the TV this year...or dyed my hair red...or lost my voice...or got a pint spilled over me!

For that reason, and for that reason only, this cannot be the "most enjoyable" in memory ;o)

Ah, you seem to believe we could actually win things then. :)

The last time I thought like that, was when we got knocked out by Brazil under sven.

That was 6 years ago, and I'm 20 now, I can't remember France 98, and I only vaguely remember Euro 96, in fact, only 1 match, and that's due to it being shown so much.
2008-06-20 15:28:44
I agree the germans first goal was classy to watch, a nice team goal.
2008-06-20 15:39:39
I was about to say bring back Sven...i think he really did take us to our peak, to be honest, i thought we were brilliant under him, except when we're winning and we sit too deep and don't close anyone down.

I'm 22, so my memory is roughly the same ;o) but whether i think we could win doesn't really have anything to do with it. All the teams in the competition think they can win, more so now than ever because Greece won last time. If Ronaldinho didn't fluke a freekick against Seaman then we could have been in that final...and anything can happen in finals...

I "remember" '96, for that one game too really...i can't believe that would have made me 10 and i can definately remember yelling at Gareth Southgate things that i shouldn't have yelled when i was 10! ;o) and i certainly remember France '98...i still think Owen has never been as good as he was when he was 17/18 in that competition.

If English players weren't so scared of defeat all the time i think we would have made a couple of those finals.
2008-06-20 15:42:41
yup, this goal of Owen against Romania....that was something...
2008-06-20 15:48:31
his against argentina i can actually remamber sitting in my little room and watching that :D

cant remember frace cept when we got knocked out :/ korea was awesome all those days of school to watch and then watching the brazil game in the hall :)

i have to say i feel the same as DJ when it comes to international competitions without england... i enjoy the football but not the occassion. it is not that i really believe we will win the cup - not since 1996 when 3 Lions rang out across england (but not again in 98) - but i know we have a chance to win each individual game; as long as we do that each time the dream stays alive. even now i think england is good enough to beat everyother team in the world... not consitently, but in any one competition they only have to do it once. the other big difference when england play if you have a girlfriend/wife then they will either watch with you or forgive you back to back football for 2 weeks. and in 2004 companies around the country went out of their way to allow employees to watch the games. without england it is just a competition; with england it is an event!

the only time i enjoyed it as much without england was in 1994. i was living in cyprus and my local was an irish bar. ireland made it through to the final 16, and every time they played it was a massive party. plus being in a holiday town we had all countries there, and everyone in a party mood. there was an argentine group accross the road in a hotel, and they had trumpets and drums which they played out of the windows while we blocked the raod and everyone danced on the cars... happy days

Of course, that was the last time England missed out on a tournament... ;-)

I think it's been refreshing having us not involved - no expectations, and it's been entertaining and enjoyable throughout. No lamenting poor-quality 1-0 wins and Beckham's baby toe being headline news gets my vote.

The annoying thing is I disagree with the notion Germany v Italy would be boring, as neither of them have looked remotely good defensively. Indeed, no side has really excelled in that department, and this happens to be England's strength (Russia away and Croatia at home aside, but our first-choice defence wasn't available for either). We could well have profited in our usual dull manner if we'd been involved...
