Subject: Guitar Hero III

2008-07-24 18:02:56
I got this for my birthday, I wasn't going to get it for myself, there's something deeply wrong about a 36 year old buying a fisher price guitar to jump around his living-room with, but I found it to be rather enjoyable.

I think robnob mentioned that he plays this on his website, anyone else here play ?

I don't own an Xbox 360 (i know it's on all the major 'soles) but i've played it a fair few times with a mate on his and i find it rather enjoyable.

Bit of The Killers, When You Were Young, lovely job. For a game i don't own, i can hold my own on Medium pretty nicely.

Rock Band has been out a little while now (drums and i think singing?) and to be honest when i saw it in HMV the drums are pretty pathetic.

America are already releasing Rock Band II in September, so i guess there are enough loonies out there, and at about £100 a pop, they're right.

I haven't got it yet but will do this weekend probably. Please explain the game as the twunts in the game shop are insufferable pricks dressed like metal fans but really just thick nerds, and the bairns playing the demo one are unapproachable.

There are several modes; Career, Multiplayer, Solo Play and some others. The main aim of single player is taking your newly named band on tour, unlocking songs as you go. As long as you hit enough notes and don't get booed off then the song will be "complete". I think you have to complete 3 songs in each segment of 4 to unlock the next section.

The guitar (depending on the console) has the buttons where your left hand normally goes (for right handers) and the strings are controlled by your right. The strings are just a long button, that can be strummed backwards and forwards to hit the notes. To hit a note, you have to watch the screen, hold down (is the easiest but not only way) the relevant button and strum the button at the right moment. It's pretty tricky to begin with, but as long as you keep it on easy you'll get there. You get much more enjoyment if you can start playing on Medium or higher though as it feels as if you are playing the song a little bit more.

You can also twang the thingy (have you noticed i don't know much about guitars yet?) which is quite fun and that just gives you extra points. Also, as you start building up points by hitting notes you can turn the guitar vertically and solo away kinda thing.

There is also a kinda Mario Kart style battle mode that is good fun against another person, if you have two guitars.

sounds extremely spoddy!

I will get it, then.

two guitars sounds a bit too much little duelling banjo's to me...

oh, and it is called a whammy bar or tremolo arm if you are a ponce or guitar teacher.

I have played the guitar for 30 odd years, do you think it is harder than if you know nothing?

I think it would be harder if you have never played guitar or own a guitar. One of my friends can play on expert very well and he's the guitarist in his own band. It could of course be because he likes guitar he plays lots of Rock Band and got good, but i think the technique he has in playing his own definately helps, without a doubt.

30 years experience i think could mean you'll be a bit of a whizz...are you generally a pretty good gamer?

not bad, although I lack the patience to unlock every tiny thing unless the game is awesome. sounds silly enough for me though, I think mrs angel might like it too. or do they do a cello hero one? ;-)

I got it wrong, its Guitar Hero III I have been playing, and he got Rock Band for his birthday which he reckons is much better so far.

You'll probably have no problem with easy and medium levels, although I'm starting to find medium a bit tough as I get into Knights of Cydonia territory if I'm honest.

My sis and her bloke came round to have a go on it, and couldn't get through 1 song on easy though, so having musical rhythm definitely benefits.

Sounds funky! Although I now fully expect to get thrashed my Mrs Jaize as she was showing off the other day by sight reading a piece in 11/4 time and playing it perfectly first go...

I can't even think in 11/4 time!
2008-07-25 12:23:53
don't you just count 2 4's and a 3 in your head ?

You two sound far too clever for your own good, I can't even sight-read.

i play guitar hero a bit. i do like it too its great fun.

playing a real guitar does help alot but you still need to settle into the game but the timing is quite forgiving.

plenty of songs to download as well as those already on the disc.

"although I'm starting to find medium a bit tough as I get into Knights of Cydonia territory if I'm honest."

its them galloping triplets right? it got me for a bit but you smash through it with time, then raining blood is the nextbugger to get through.

KOC on hard took me ages but its not that hard in comparison to some songs.
