I want to use some free ones for a work project; as our IT will take yonks to set them up on the intranet, if ever. Does anyone have any recommendations?

phpbb is supposed to be good, but your web server needs to have php and mysql installed. And you'll be reliant upon IT installing it. But I think that's the same for any forum software, probably, as it needs to sit on a web server.

http://www.phpbb.com/ very good one...

to avoid the problems with your IT you can also download xampp a server you can easily install in you pc to teste it as it already contain all php, mysql, apache setups...

would running it within xampp cause a loss of performance ? if not, i might whack that on our web server, as i've been meaning to set up phpbb for work and haven't got round to it yet. sounds like a quick way to get things up and running.

Cheers guys. That helps a bit, but ideally I don't want to use our IT bods at all. It was more if there's any reputable externally-hosted sites that would give me a free forum to use or where the advertising isn't too awful.

My main beef, I guess, would be being able to independently back it up, not sure if that would be possible using Yahooo forums or whatever it would turn out to be?

Xampp's easy peasy to set up and I've not noticed any issues with performance with it.

Isn't xampp mostly wamp with Perl or are there other subtle differences?
