Many years ago, for reasons I forget, I signed up with AOL. I pay £16 a month for a service I never use. I've been trying to cancel online but they completely ignore all my e-mails. Now they seem to be preventing me from even sending e-mails to their own aol address.

I'm going to have to phone them now...

Anyone managed to cancel their AOL account easily?

Must be like being married to a prostitute. Or something.

Its not easy, you will speak to an Indian call centre who will try and make it hard for you to cancel. You need them to send your MAC Code via email.

Good luck....you may need it.

you could always cancel your direct debit and wait for the nasty letters to arrive.

Me: I'd like to cancel my AOL account please

AOL: I'm sorry to hear that sir. Bear with me while I access your records....... May I ask why you wish to cancel your account. I see you have been with us for 9 years. I would like to thank you for being a customer for such a long time. We value your membership.

Me: I never use it.

AOL: I see you have used your account every other day in the last month.

Me: I've been e-mailing you to cancel my account.

AOL: If you wish, I can upgrade your subscription or offer you a discount on your monthly fee.

Me: No thank you, I just want to cancel my account since I never use it.

AOL: But I see you have used your account every other day in the last four weeks.

Me: As I said, I tried to e-mail you to cancel my account.

AOL: Do you have a BT landline?

Me: Yes, although we only use it for their broadband service.

AOL: We can offer you a deal where you can make free calls all day, every day.

Me: I don't have a telephone

AOL: You wouldn't have to pay for any of your calls.

Me: I don't have a telephone. I have a landline for my broadband only.

AOL: Beacause you are a valued customer, we would like to offer you...

Me: I just want to cancel my account. I don't want any special offers, I don't have a telephone so I don't want free calls. I've been e-mailing you for a month trying to cancel my account and you have not responded. Please can I cancel my account?

AOL: Here is your account cancellation code..

I've cut out about 20 minutes of verbal sparring, repetition and circular arguments. Why is it so painful to do such a simple thing? Drives me mad.

Was it an Indian call centre?

I had exactly the same thing. They just read from a book which tells them what to say and do....it drove me mad.

I think it was. I'm just glad it is all over with. I was running low on patience by the end.

My parents had the same problem with their phoning company. Now we just don't pay our telephone bills and see what happens.
