Subject: Two Minutes Silence

2008-11-12 15:39:43
dylanos and Woppa are both twunts.

Anyone out there following this thread, don't listen to them as they are just the sort of unrespecting oiks that you will become if you DO NOT observe 2 minutes silence out of the 547875 minutes in an average year!

Dylanos, Woppa.

Millions of men died so that we wouldn't have to speak German. I spent 2 years trying to learn German, it is a very ugly language.

These people deserve our respect. 2 minutes of respect per year isn't so bad is it ?

i was born speaking German. I lost family on both sides of the war. My mother, as an Austrian, lost uncles to both sides of the war. if you have to have your 2 minutes silence are we not enlightened enough these days to know that we should remember the dead on all sides in all wars? many of the troups fighting for Germany were from conquered countries... they did not chose to go to war. as long as we have the attitude described by NCN we will remain moraly retarded.

I'm pretty sure the horrendousness of war, and the impact a lost Great War would have had on our lives is on my mind more than 4 minutes a year. I don't need to be told when to be respectful. Take, for example, the increasing use of minute's silences at football. Even if you can look beyond a sort of "respect overload" effect this sort of thing has, are you seriously telling me that observing that two minutes silence and then going immediately into a roaring cacophony in support of those eleven ridiculously overpaid people representing you means that you have truly been reflecting in those two minutes? Say it ain't so.

Quite periods of contemplation on such things are not beyond me. Telling me to stop what I'm doing at an allotted hour and then going about my business as if those two minutes never happened without thinking it a farce, I'm afraid, is.

Fair doos, wrong subject to attempt to interject humour.

I reckon, if you'd left the so-called serious side of things run a little longer, you'd have been cool. Try again in a page or so, and I'll join in.

wrong subject to attempt to interject humour.

nah is all good...

incidentally, i believe the german linguistic technique of compound nouns is a winner we should all adopt. who needs new words when you can just keep cobbling old ones together until you have described the object in question

A German teacher of mine (and FM's, obviously) once told of an English pal of hers who was in germany and forgot the word for milk (Milch, which seems hard to forget) but could remember the words for cow (Kuh) and juice (Saft) so used the phrase "Ich mochte* Kuhsaft". She got what she wanted, too, apparently.

Yeah, I know. I can't be bothered to find where an umlaut is hidden.

I work for a German company (big corporate) and they allowed us to observe it and it was observed impeccably too :)
2008-11-12 17:55:16
The only thing I remember about that German teacher was that she said that I said Lowenbrau incorrectly and would never get served it in Germany.....
2008-11-12 17:56:13
did you pronounce it "lion brew"? the germans hate it when you do that
2008-11-12 17:59:12
"Beer mate. NOW!"
2008-11-12 18:00:43
probably you forgot to put your beer towel on a bar stool before going down to breakfast. you must respect other nation's traditions
2008-11-12 18:03:51
that sounded a bit morally retarded to me, dylanos :)
2008-11-12 18:10:27
hey i didn't say we had to like all nations, just that we need to move on from the whole "2 world wars & 1 world cup" attitude. it doesn't stop us acknowledging that when it comes to holiday resorts German's are basically rude overweight inappropriately naked twunts
2008-11-12 18:14:06
@dylanos - throwing stones in glass houses......have you seen what the brits get up to in Benidorm / Malia etc......
