I watched a long documentary lately on this, we tried political means to avoid going to war. The Germans moved swiftly through Europe with hardly any resistance. I believe the French were building a wall to stop an invasion and the Germans drove around it. lol
I think many countries tried to avoid the situation - but then once the situation occupied their countries it became too late.
Had it not been for our vey small country I fear Europe would be one large country right now full of blondes only. Bad news for me with Brown hair.....what I have left anyway. :/
The World Wars are scary things, my nan who is 92 now told me of the day a German Bomber went above their heads and her dad literally threw who into their shelter. I cannot imagine what it was like. She loved in the East End near the docks which were the most bombed area due to supply ships etc.

Yup, it was the Maginot Line. The Germans simply got around it...:-)
Well it's true, that the Western countries tried to avoid the war by political means. The problem is, that it was almost obvious that it won't work. And the saddest thing is that the British PM, Chamberlain as I recall, was able to do everything just to avoid the war. Germans were able to take country one after another, undisturbed. Poland was also forsaken, even though there was an official agreement, that Britain will help if it will be needed - actually if France and GB decided in 1939 to attack the Germans, then it would've been a very, very fast war. But the Frenchies didn't wanted to fight, and GB was hoping for peace until Churchill got the PM position.
But it's also true, that if it wasn't for Britain, the whole continent would've been German or Russian, or both. GB soldiers and commanders did a great job, winning an almost inevitably lost war.

I have picked a paragraph at random
1.6 The infernal war moves to Britain
August the 8th was the day when the famous Battle of Britain commenced. The Germans knew that they have to attack through the air, otherwise their attempt would be vain. The British naval fleet, the Royal Navy, was far too powerful and big for German Kriegsmarine. Their aim was to overcome the RAF and then defeat the Royal Navy with joined efforts of Kriegsmarine and Luftwaffe. The next step would have been an amphibious landing and that was something that would have meant the end of Britain, therefore the sky clashes were crucial in the defence against Germany. While most of the RAF fliers were novices, many of them still during their basic pilot training, RAF had an urgent need for experienced well-skilled fighter pilots. This was the time, when the Air Ministry of Britain finally agreed to accept most Polish demands and eventually removed Polish pilots from the Volunteer Reserve and acknowledged them as members of the Polish Air Forces. They no longer had to swear their oath to the British King, although they still had to wear the uniforms of RAF and persisted under the command of RAF. Yet, it was nothing compared to the succeeding announcement, which proclaimed the formation of two entirely new Polish squadrons. One of the was the most famous Polish squadron during the Battle of Britain, called 303 “Warsaw” Kosciuszko Squadron; the other one was 302 “Poznan”. The squadron leader who was put into command of Kosciuszko Squadron was Ronald Kellett, who, at first, was very doubtful about the potential of the 303. His opinion was based solely on the fact, that PAF defence of Poland lasted scarce three days and there was no reason to believe that Polish fliers will do any better this time. He could not be more wrong, and soon he was about to find out, how far away from truth was his judgement.

Although:
"The next step would have been an amphibious landing" - I've found the "sea landing" in the dictionary, is 'amphibious' really the better word?

...and yet the French still hate us. lol
My Grandad served in the desert (Egypt) - its hard to imagine a war like that ever happening again.
The Germans invaded and took many countries with little force, they were trully prepared for war and nobody else seemed to be. I find it hard to believe after the treaties imposed on them from WW1 that they managed to build an army like that with nobody raising serious concerns / questions.
The US pretty much ignored the War until Pearl Harbour too. Yet they are of the opinion that they won it for all.......like Politics this is and could be a sensitive topic. :)

No the stupidity of the Germans trying to take Russia won us the war.
To be fair there are hundreds of factors involved in it, all creating the end goal. I find it very sad that what our ancestors fought for some people tend to take for granted though. I certainly would not have wanted to be fighting in a war like that.

Well one thing is a certain, and I think it's the most politically correct thing to say - if the Allies lacked USA, Great Britain or Russia, then it would've been much harder to win the war.
And yes, Hitler made an atrocious mistake by attacking Russia, while still having unfinished business on the West of Europe. I've heard though that Stalin was so shocked by this, that he got simply speechless. Assuming Hitler concentrated only at the West and USA not joining the war...it would've been a matter of time when Germany would annihilate Russia and become the United States of Europe + part of Asia :)
