looking at the seedins and pots the draw could be very interesting,in my opinion i really hope we avoid portugal and i see ivory coast being a very strong side,my brother in law is from ghana so id like to avoid them aswell. I know you have to beat anyone to win the world cup but having an easier group wont do us any harm.what are peoples thoughts on this years world cup then?

If we avoid big injuries in the run up then it's probably the best chance we've had for a very long time.

seeds ? pots ? what is this ? gardeners' question time ?

Spain will win it. We will get a huge build up and then find that we cannot win as we are technically just not good enough and have no quality strikers. I know I am being negative but I just cannot see us winning any tournaments until we start nuturing technically gifted players at youth level rather than the big boys who can run fast.

Oh, and the other thing. It's a "winter world cup", must be the first in a long time. This will favour North European teams I think, as the temperatures will be similar to our Autumn and Spring.

I think Germany will surprise a few people, as they always do with even rubbish players. Spain have to be favourites, although if Torres is injured, how many other world class strikers do they have ? South Africa will get to the quarters / semis, it seems that being the home team carries you that far. We'll do our usual, flatter to deceive and get knocked out by Germany.

This is the weird thing with this world cup, we'll have some games at 2C and others in other parts of South Africa at hot temperature and at altitude too. Its going to be a weird world cup. Oh and Torres will no doubt be fit by then, David Villa is also not too bad. ;)

The luck of the draw and the where games are played will have a huge part to play in this world cup imo.

You saw when Bolivia beat Argentina 6-1 I think it was at altitude what that can do.

just having been on Lake Titicaca, I agree.

although the highest, a paltry 1694m above sea level at Jo'burg won't have much affect on anything in reality.

That wasn't just the altitude though, the players seem to hate Maradona.
2009-12-03 15:34:47
Were they English then? ;)
2009-12-03 15:52:43
No, hating Maradona is a default emotion. I think that's the reason he became so good at football, as a survival mechanism. I'm fairly certain he hates himself if his drug-taking record is anything to go by...

Maybe, I still maintain his OTHER goal against England was one of the best I have ever seen on an International stage. He like so many others wasted his god given talent imo.

My favourite player so far has been Zidane though...I am sure he had superglue on his boots!
2009-12-03 16:04:53
He did when he head-butted Maserati, or whatever he's called/
2009-12-03 16:07:12
Why is that the genius players have all had a nutcase side to them....Gazza, Besty, Maradona, Zidane.

Pele and Bobby Moore seem to be the only sane ones I can think of, not sure what Messi is like. Anyway I am digressing...sorry. :)
2009-12-03 16:27:14
nutcases are more likely to try something outside of the norm.

arrr u started a topic gford ya plum....u kept that quiet!!! I think where ur having games does have a definate effect on how things are gonna go....spain will defo be a serious contender, they have more quality players than just torres,so will the ever strong brazil they are technically so strong. norwichcitynil are you serious saying south africa to make the quaters/semis....have u seen then play?they are totally shite even with the support theyll be lucky to get 1 win let alone qualify. My theory on englands chances are the gk (whoever it may be) has to many dodgy moments, the defense has quality individuals but isnt a unit which makes us vunerable,an its the question of how is he gonna set the mdfielders....personally i wouldnt have a big man upfront coz all that does is makes us hoof it(which is poo football).id have a 451 with rooney upfront lennon n j.cole on the flanks with lamps n barry holding with gerard behind rooney...i very much doubt he will play this but everyones got an opinion.no doubt itll be the standard 442 with someone playing out of position...
