I think it was in James Clavell's Shogun that two samurais discuss if there is a justification for a vassal to rebel against his feudal lord. While one said No, the other said that there was one such excuse for doing so, which was if the vassal won the rebellion! or some such...

This could easily be applied here in this scenario.
