I've just been watching the Man Utd vs Leeds game, and as much as I didn't like Leeds when in the Prem, I feel it's a shame that they are not there. The energy & atmosphere that came from teams like Leeds, Newcastle, Sheff Wed, Forest etc, I feel, is not replaced by Wigan, Burnley, Portsmouth, Bolton etc.
So that got me thinking. Which 20 teams would I like to see in the Premiership? Which would make the best premiership?.
Here is my 20. It's based on English football history (it includes the winner of the top league in all from all but ~9 seasons), biased by my age, and also trying to give the Premier league a good geographical mix. I also tried to reinstate some derbies & grudge matches missing currently, when instead we get Wigan vs Bolton watched by 12 people.
So here it is. Non current Premiership teams with reasons.
The ones already in the Prem!
1. Arsenal.
2. Aston Villa
3. Blackburn Rovers
4. Chelsea
5. Everton
6. Liverpool
7. Manchester United
8. Manchester City
9. Sunderland
10. Tottenham Hotspur
11. West Ham United
12. Wolverhampton Wanderers
The ones that were not…that I'd promote...and why..
13. Bristol City -Probably the most controversial! Personal bias. I grew up near Bristol. The South West / South Wales should have a Prem club. Bristol City or Cardiff City? Bristol!
14. Derby County -Solid top-tier team & double league winners in 1970s. Guaranteed 6pts for forest in the Prem
15. Ipswich -A great regional team. At their peak at the same time as forest, so probably my bias. Although oddly I prefer Norwich who didn't make it...
16. Leeds United -Triple previous league winners, Large city, big team, one we liked to hate!
17. Newcastle United- Large city, big team, good attacking football, underachievers
18. Nottingham Forest-Previous league winners, solid top tier team in 80’s and 90’s. European cup double
19. Sheffield Wednesday-Multiple previous league winners, big city, old club
20. Sheffield United-Previous league winners, big city, old club, creates another great Derby
What do you think???. To get some further discussions going here are the teams that did not make it!
The prem teams I dropped
Hull City
Wigan Athletic
Bolton Wanderers
Burnley
Portsmouth
Stoke City
Fulham
Birmingham City
And the Football League clubs that I considered, but missed out…
West Brom
Southampton
Norwich City
Cardiff City
Leicester City
Middlesborough

I'm the only person wth Bradford City? Why is that?
Looking at the lists i have to agree with you guys.....Except Man Utd.
I would have them relegated to league 2.....
I would have them relegated to league 2.....
I'm surprised noone has gone for Coventry in theirs.
I totally forgot them. Funny thing was that I went to Warwick university and Cov was our "local" team, and so I watched many a dismal game with them normally scoring 0. If my memory isn't dodgy, I think Ian Rush may have scored for Liverpool against them. (His 2nd time with them).
that brown strip they had in the 80's killed their chances...
yeah, west ham are small time, although i did consider them instead of ipswich. I like the atmosphere at Fulham
Not sure about that but I remember Jan Molby scored a hat-trick of penalties against Coventry City in the 80s.
I think the Saints when they were at the Dell should be on the list, but not now they are at St. Monkey's...
