Subject: British elections

they should take away EMA, the systems pathetic.

anyway, Browns going now, hopefully its a decent guy that replaces him and coalitions with the lib dems.

But people were in the main using a vote for them as a protest, because they knew that they wouldn't get in. If there was a danger that they were going to actually get seats, then most people wouldn't vote for them

I hope you're right, but I'm not nearly so confident ...having a vote (that counts) and making an informed choice don't necessarily go hand-in-hand.

You need look no further than dear old Mr Hitler ...the Nazi Party managed to poll 38% under PR, in what is agreed was a free and fair election. But I think we're safe for now, Mr Griffin has had a charisma bypass.

I don't agree with that, I think it will be a coalition of power with the Tories and LDs...You will see members of the Lib dems in the cabinet, this is a chance for Clegg to give them chance power of which they have Wanted for a very long time.

The Labs will vote for a new leader very shortly after a new government is formed and will demand another election on the basis they have got rid of Brown.

38 % in the UK would have won a first past the post election for either Labour or the Tories.

I doubt we'll ever get pure PR - or that anyone will even propose it

Even the LibDem's favourite STV system can be set up to mean tiny parties get nothing much - so that you need over 25% or 33% in a constituency to get an MP. The BNP wouldn't get much out of that in many places, if anywhere

milliband - no!
balls - self explanatory...

that doesnt make sense...

the first bit maybe, but the price is very, very high and they will have grumbles in the backbenches.

the second bit, what? how can the Labour party demand another election on the basis they got rid of Brown?

Very simple young Jason... Brown was never very popular with the public...We kept hearing the old "We never voted for him" line...The media hated him and the only ones who loved him was his party faithful.

New leader, new party, new ideas...We have had this old line chucked at us for years....Cons did it with Major and Labs with Blair.

This will no doubt get Alistair "The snake" Campbell working overtime.

Do really think they'll demand a fresh election when:
a) they've got not mandate or mechanism to trigger one.
b) They've been banging on about the need for a strong stable government to take the tough decisions that are needed for the economy - trying to bring down a government mid-term doesn't seem to sit well with this.
c) Even if the the Lib Dems loved the new Labour leader, would they really jump out of bed with the Tories? I cant see how this would give a very positive impression of the coalition politics that the Lib Dems believe in so passionately - destroying a sitting government and forcing fresh elections in the teeth of possibly our worst finacial crisis.

How long do you give it before cracks start forming in the coalition?

Destroying a sitting government and forcing fresh elections in the teeth of possibly our worst finacial crisis?

This won't stop political ambition...Nothing is done and dusted yet and already all parties are moaning about the outcome.

Given we have a mainly right wing press, how do you think it would play in the media - which is where a sizeable proportion of voters form their opinion - if the Lib Dems p*ss on their own wet dream of 'working together'?
This is the Lib Dems chance to prove that concensus politics can work, not commit political suicide.
