Subject: your england first 11

2010-06-02 10:32:31
Not Gerrard imo
2010-06-02 10:53:37
Nobody has Gary Neville in their squad? shock horror!
2010-06-02 11:04:16
Neville is a waste of space :P

@Muhajir

Whatever team we come up with I am pretty sure we wont make it past the 16 stages... :( Miracle if we even reach the Quarters.

Have you seen our draw ...you don't even need to be a blind optimist to believe we have a chance of at least reaching the quarters. England certainly aren't world beaters, but neither are any of the teams we're likely to face.

If we top our group - then its probably Serbia or Ghana in the last 16, followed by one of France, Mexico, Greece, South Korea or Nigeria in the quarters.

A very kind draw in all likelihood!

Steelers I have seen the draw however I am still pessimistic.

You know if Beckham was not injured he would most probably made it in the team! We must have the most vintage team.. Only Rooney has the flair, form and skills for a world cup. I also note that the team lacks confidence.

I don't disagree, but...

- Algeria's form and results have (technically speaking) been cack
- Slovenia are solid but lack flair and goals
- The USA should be our toughest challenge in the group

- Serbia are a lot like Slovenia, only more talented
- Ghana could be dangerous, but will miss Essien and youthful inexperience could count against

- France have been woeful (and were lucky to qualify)
- Mexico could be tricky, but struggled to qualify against the likes of Jamaica and Honduras
- South Korea are solid, but beatable
- Greece have hardly set the world alight since winning the Euro's (besides they're a case in point
They won the Euro's with no flair, no form and no particularly skillful players)
- Nigeria finished 3rd in the ACN, but lack the star players they've had in previous WCs

Having said all this, we'll now fail to get out of our group :)

You forgot one thing about the Greece squad who won Euro.. Their teamwork was the best of all teams that took part and played as a team with great confidence too; not only did they resort to just defending cause they were deemed underdogs they also took to attacks.
On the other hand I never seen England play with decisive cohesiveness in ANY match recently. Even South Korea have a great meshed squad (seen their matches) and play at incredible speeds...

Thats not how Greece won Euro 2004. Greece won Euro 2004 by boring us to death with their 11 men defence and they would wear their opponents down and then score. They had (and have) no flair and are a boring team, which was why it was a relief to see Spain's flowing football 2 years ago. Greece have no world beaters, South Korea have 1 good player, Nigeria have lost many of their stars and have Kanu in their final 23. France are a shadow of 98, 2000 and 06 (the later stages) and are closer to their WC 2002 quality, Mexico are decent but we beat them last week with a weakened squad, and Uruguay have a decent attack but no real depth below Forlan and Suarez.

i didnt realise Wales played mexico as well

i thought someone might bring that up:

I am 1/4 English and I always support England :)

and Wales too of course :)

I did not mean to say that Greece of now are the same as when they won the Euro.
Their games were boring but it was full of technical play where you neutralize the opposition with screening. However when they counter attacked they did attack as a team. Team play is so very important.
IMO
England = The most overated team for the last 10 years.
Beckham = The most overated player last 10 years.

We will see how England fares without teamplay. Pray that the coach does make a cohesive squad.

When you have someone like Heskey in the squad who can't even make first eleven at his club you have a right to be pessimistic.

True Korea has only one outstanding player but as a team they play very very well. They beat Japan in a fast paced flowing game.. Look at our game against Japan. :S
I had to cover my head in a paper bag.

Was looking at the odds for an England WC win. Somehow we are 6-1 third favourites to win the WC.
2010-06-02 19:08:29
Yup.. overrated as usual. Bet against that and you will make good money... ;)
2010-06-02 19:15:50
But our nationalist pride won't let us, as we have it ingrained that England WILL win the cup this year, and can't shake it.

On that subject, a friends' dad changed his lottery numbers because they weren't 'lucky'
Two weeks later (this Saturday, I think), those old numbers came up.
That's a fail :P
