Subject: Qatar hosting worldcup?...

2010-12-06 14:44:15
whats being bankrupt got to do with anything though? We dont need to spend anything and would make a profit from the tournament to cover all the policing and whatever. Qatar won for their money and not for footballing reasons which is a fix, surely as they got it on the basis of something that isnt in the requirements?
2010-12-06 15:05:06
But money is a major requirement. Whether its openly discussed or being close doors. Its there.

Qatar have no hooligans. Wins it for me.

im not surprised, no booze though and islamic law. Wonder how many get their hands cut off out there
2010-12-06 17:28:44
I've known people who have stayed in Arabic hotels, and provided you sign a disclaimer saying that you are infidel, you're allowed to buy booze. No doubt they'll have something similar to that for the WC.

right. stop reading the daily nonsense. if you think a country's debt has anything to do with potential bankruptcy you are an idiot. There are no countries that have an import/export situation that is free of public debt and even Zimbabwe at over 300% of public debt as a percentage of GDP isn't bankrupt. Any country that runs it's own fiscal policy cannot be bankrupt as there cannot be a situation where it has no inherent worth.

If we take the recent bail-outs and look at their debts, Greece 108%, Ireland 63%, Iceland 108% it looks bad but it is all relative. Japan runs at about 200% with no problems due to the fact the world bank still sees them as a good risk. Qatar as part of the UAE runs at 47% and generally outside of natural resources they have little to offer so they are not a good risk even though they are cash rich as can be seen by Dubai literally dying with the recent economic problems elsewhere.

I don't. My point was Qatar are in a better financial position for this kinda of event than England at the moment. I.e money in the bank. A Country can never properly go bankrupt, just deeper into debt.

But Qatar v England wasn't even the issue as these were two different votes anyway. Russia and Qatar won. Virgin hosting, Finance & development being the order of the day. England quite possible p1ssed off Fifa near the end aswell, or Fifa were stringing you and probably some or all the other losing Countries.

Fifa stand for developing the game accross the World. Therefore Qatar especially have a good case. No Arab Country has ever hosted the WC. The promotional effect could well be extremely good for these Countries in the future. Recent example, USA football gained a lot from their hosting.

If we are to award WCs on technical ability to host them without development. Then were going to see Spain, England, Germany, Italy and 1 or two others hosting them all. Nice for the rest of the World to have to keep going to Europe.

Oh I have no problem with the Qatar one at all, tiny country prepared to spend 4 billion to host the WC, fine.

It is the one in Russia that is wrong on loads of levels.

Curiously all the papers keep saying we had the best bid etc. etc. but I know several people that have said actually it was flawed on many levels in reality.

But FIFA are corrupt, Sepp Blatter is a twunt and I bet when Putin meets up with him next week large currency-filled suitcases get through customs without a problem.

The World is full of corruption and FIFA and everyone else are part of the World last I checked.

England was a good bid for sure. But they wanted it to be London centric as per usual. Not sure what the flaws were. Transport I guess would be a possible problem. The M25 etc. Hospitality unlikely but I wouldn't know.

England had there 'incentives' and probably full on 'bribes' on the table. Anyone who thinks they are innocent and its just Russia being allegedly naughty are not living in the real World. Russia probably just that little bit better at the 'politics' or more lucrative than England.

I think that like lots of things, we are a bit rubbish at it as a nation. Putin is a world leader in bribery and corruption with a a truly nasty streak that our nancy politicians can only marvel at.

He has a bigger carrot and equally impressive stick Im sure. We tend to go one or the other, thats the problem!
2010-12-06 18:35:39
innit. besides I am not sure a WC would be any good in blighty, like lots of things the dream is better than reality.

It's really funny to hear people saying that England might have had problems with money for the tournament, or with the transport. Really funny, when you compare it to Poland who actually got a major tournament to host, not to mention Ukraine, which is a real joke - seriously, if you would've seen their roads you'd laugh your asses off.

For example, it's 100% certain that Poland will not finish most of the highways and it will be really 'hard' to get from Poland to Ukraine. I'd recommend a plane.

Moneywise, Poland was not that good too. We're not poor, although in debt, but we're spending almost all that we get [except for some EU dotations which are not spent because idiots were made responsible for making the paperwork and failed]. We needed the cash from EU and UEFA[?] to build the stadiums, roads from what I know. So money of the host is not a factor I guess...

All in all I have no idea how after a legitimate voting Poland could've been chosen. Same goes with Russia. The only difference is, that we can say that Poland has some footie tradition. Russia - a bit less, I think? Qatar...none?

From what I've read, Surkis got the votes for PL-UKR tournament with some banknotes sticking out of his pocket. I'd imagine Russia and Qatar getting it the same way. Funny world we live in.

hilarious

I think the sooner we English accept the fact that we are not among the Worlds leading Nations the better... and now with all those cuts in Education looks like we have accelerated our demise to the 'was' Empires/Nations...
