Worked for Smashing Pumpkins.

They got lucky. So many bands lose the energy of the first album by listening to people who are supposed to know what they are doing.

I'll disagree to an extent. The "difficult second album" can be awesome. I'll point to The Bends by Radiohead, Siamese Dream by Smashing Pumpkins and The Colour and the Shape by Foo Fighters as being absolute classic second albums, off the top of my head. On your side, though, you have Ten by Pearl Jam (never surpassed by them) and Parachutes by Coldplay (a typical example of what you are talking about, as far as I am concerned. Oh yeah, that and him thinking his shit smells like chocolate.).

I guess what I am trying to say is that if done well, the second album can be a classic.

(I've now convinced myself that really there's no such thing...having thought about it, quite a lot of bands have taken a good few albums to "grow" into their sound. Few would argue that Muse's latest album was there best, for example, or that the early Incubus stuff was rubbish. Red Hot Chili Peppers 5th album was their masterpiece, as another example.)

Disclaimer: All examples off the top of my head. There are, more than likely, better and more mainstream examples

Chris Martin should be destroyed.

As should Akon, who is equally pap. The people that keep on buying his stuff must be musically challenged to say the least.

Dandy Warhols
Ben Folds
Foo Fighters
Queens of the Stone Age
Royksopp

Seen them all live except Royksopp. And they all played awesome sets. Dandy Warhols played for 3 hours (it was their 10year anniversary). Seen Ben Folds twice... once at a regular gig and once with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra... both were amazing performances.

I also quite like Coldplay, Radiohead, Madness, Weezer, Wesley Willis and of course some old U2, Crowded House and The Police.

i used to think like ten-twelve yrs ago that a band has to grow into their sound but i don't want to mention seminal underground bands of marginal and embarrassing sub-genres for the time being.
now i have a completely different belief: i only like listening to music of young people who have obviously summoned all their creative energy into their first album. and my taste is taking me to more and more primitive musical territories MF From Hell from The Datsuns being my all-time favourite at the moment. ;) and everything with woo-hoo in it, like a 2-year-old, so i should go and buy the new kaiser chiefs album at last.

I like quite an odd selection of music.

The Killers, Scissor Sisters, but generally there is too much with band stuff that I find I do like, but other stuff I don't so am not particularly interested in specific bands. Older stuff Queen, Europe, Duran Duran aren't too shabby.

Favourite track of all time has to be Eye of the Tiger though.

Thing is, even when Chris Martin is speaking in interviews etc, he is equally as annoying.

Try the maccabees. They are young, and have some woo hoo ing. "Latchmere's got a wave machine oo oo oo oo oo oo" and "Are you coo ee oo ee oool? Symetricoooeeeoooeeool?" just two examples of there woohooiness.

yeah, that's made for me, cheers mate!

in return i suggest the wombats, they have great woo-hoo potential and tellison who sound like an intellectual american first wave emo band but they're from lahndin, not at all annoying, and the lead singer is constantly performing the unbelievable smiling-while-singing trick.

It's not Marty Pellows is it?
2007-03-01 13:03:15
should i take it as an insult? ;)
definitely not, but please refrain from reminding me of bands of www calibre in the future.
2007-03-01 13:04:09
I've DLed some wombats, but you can keep your tellison.

well, i started a pogo at one of their gigs on the basis of emo being a deviation of punk and being, well, somewhat intoxicated. to my surprise it was well-received by both the audience and the band. so i gladly keep them.
