well, i started a pogo at one of their gigs on the basis of emo being a deviation of punk and being, well, somewhat intoxicated. to my surprise it was well-received by both the audience and the band. so i gladly keep them.

Latchmere and First Love are better, and I think they have a new one out today...the video of which was probably made for about two quid.

Edit: It was out yesterday, and Itunes cocked up so it's only sort of available on there.

Vivski, if you're melbourne based (and they're playing), check these smaller bands out :

Kinematic

Funny you say that. Mark Olszewski from Kinematic (and now I see he's played with Shiney too) is someone I've known for several years. They've polished up a lot from their early days. Good music, good guys.

Fatkev, have you still got a maiden T-shirt?

Nah, they've all shrunk over the years... ;)

The wife got me a few 'new' ones for Chrimblemas though, and I wear them with pride. I don't give a [snip] what other people think. :D

Cool ! His sister Jo is in shiney, I'm kind of an e-pen pal of hers from way back. His mate Deanne (also in Shiney) spent a year travelling in Canada and the UK, I met up with her a few times when she was here, we went to a They Might Be Giants gig, and they were immense as usual. It was kind of a surreal experience - 5 best selling authors reading excerpts from their works with the band playing background music in the first half, and then a proper gig in the second half. I think there were Nick Hornby, Dave Eggers, Zadie Smith and 2 others I can't remember. Then there was a signing session afterwards. A Very cool night.

myspace has loads of artists on it, thats where narina pallot (spelling ?) was found apparently. mp3.com used to be quite good, but closed down due to lack of money being made.

also, you can try here

I guess the peaks and troughs of a career are too complex to model accurately. However, from what I've been told from people who know/knew people in the industry, it's too common for a band to be signed because of the way they sound, only to go and make a record that sounds the way they sound, which then gets re-recorded to sound like Whigfield because everyone else sounds like Whigfield this month. The most obvious recent example of this that I can think of is Coldplay. Parachutes came out, and for the next couple of years, you could hear Coldplay in everything from Athlete (whose previous album was spikier and the singers delivery less laconic) to Feeder. You can still hear the drums / rhythm section from "In My Place" on other songs too.

I went to see the Killers on staurday and they were awesome. I'm also seeing a band called :( on sunday but I've never heard of them before.

I'm into lots of other suff atm. The Killers, Bloc Party, RHCP, the Fratellis, the Kooks, Arctic Monkeys, Gnarls Barkely, Kaiser Chiefs, Kasabian, Lost Prophets, Oasis as well as some older ska/punk stuff like The Clash, Specials, Kinks, Mighty Mighty Bosstones etc

I like how the Mighty Mighty Bosstones are in the same ilk as the Clash, but anyway have seen them live and are a great band

I'll disagree with you about Feeder, but only because I don't want you to be right...not because I think you are wrong. I love Feeder, and you can trace their change in musical direction to the drummer killing himself. Grant became a lot more introspective after that. That's what I'm telling myself, anyway.

That probably was their intention. Producers tend to be musical magpies though.

Been thinking about this, put another way - if you had this really great story to tell, and wanted as many people to hear it as possible, would you clothe it in the short-hand of the times, to maximise your audience ?
