Modest Mouse are good. I've been listening to Los Campesinos!, Page 44 and Sergeant recently. All are really good british indie bands so you should all DL some of there stuff (especially "Sweet Dreams Sweetcheeks" by Los Campesinos!, it's a great song).

Anyone's heard of Beady Belle? Love it, it's as relaxed as St. Germain, but with lyrics. And a very nice voice singing them.

MC Solaar is the daddy of french rap
2007-04-06 16:01:49
Hehe, I saw a poster of him in our french class. With lyrics, so I read it it was something with Chernobyl. :)

would say that MC Solar is a definite exception to the 'no one listens to french rap' rule
2007-04-08 12:43:02
It's a shame he isn't an exception to the 'all french rap is crap rule'.
2007-04-08 12:54:04
mate, once you reach the ripe old age of say, 17 or 18, you will start to realise that rap is often about more than finding easy rhymes for 'money' 'bitch' 'ak' and generally telling everyone that 'you is da man'
2007-04-08 18:10:08
french rap is much better than American rap. French rappers rap about issues that do matter instead of their bitches and their "bling bling".
2007-04-08 18:17:22
Unfortunately it's still rap whatever they're talking about.
2007-04-08 19:04:32
Tbh I can't understand french rap so I have no idea what they're talking about. But anything is better than american rap (read this and this).
2007-04-08 22:04:43
i'm sorry but you're being judgmental, biased and ruthlessly generalising. i am a great fan of hiphop music, not of the the bling scene though, and i can tell you there's been an incredible amount of top notch output out there in the past 25 years. i like canadian rap better though.[aja]

ps: akhenaton of france rules!

Sorry I do generalise a bit. I do listen to a bit of rap but mainly the faster electro side of it like Hadouken and similar. American rap in general just pisses me off because it's so over the top and stupid and barely any of it means anything anymore which completely takes the point of it away.
2007-04-08 22:14:13
yeah, most of the mainstream performers are mind-bogglingly stupid and seems like the american underground has run out of ideas, too, in general. well, mush records are still cool.

I'm an indie boy, but I've got some recommendations for people that write rap off completely. I'm not even sure if some of these are completely of that ilk, but there's some good stuff out there once you get away from the crap on MTV and in the charts.

Jurassic 5
De la Soul
DJ Shadow
RJD2
Madvillain
Soul Position
Mr Dibbs
DJ Signify
Buck 65

Or if too lazy to look up albums, look up these tracks, some of my favourites of the last 5 years or so:

DJ Revolution ('Communication')
Gang Starr ('Full Clip')
MC Det ('Hipsteppin')
Pharoahe Monch ('Simon Says')
Def Cut ('Street Level')
And of course
Pitman ('Witness the Pitness')
Ratatat ('17 Years')

Is De la Soul the one off the Gorillaz track?
