Median weekly pay for full-time employees in the UK in April 2006 was £447. so on the basis of 40 hours per week / 1820 hours per year it comes to around £20,000 -£21,000 (for pedants £20,338.50)

a good snap shot of cost of living can be found here ... cost of living in uk

Aye. Contaminated land issues take up quite a lot of my time. The legislation over here as regads determining land as contaminated isn't very helpful and there is a lot of mis-interpretation of health implications when people are trying to work out if the land is contaminated or not - fiddling the numbers so the site-specific values fall on the low side and they don't have to remediate. A lot of the time the sampling is insufficient to properly represent the site.

I've had a couple of planning applications recently for soil treatment facilities - there is a new requirement for soil to be pre-treated before it goes to landfill, so places are starting to put in soil washing, immobilisation, bioremediation plants and the like.

The biggest one round here is The Avenue an old coking plant in Chesterfield which was in pretty filthy condition and they are trying to clear up with a lot of money from East Midlands Development Agency for treatment techniques; they've got a thermal desorption plant to bake the soil and take out the hydrocarbons - it's the first time on of those has been used in the UK so it'll be interesting to see how it goes.

Anyway, that's enough about work!

thanks.
