Subject: Foot & Mouth Outbreak Surrey
Foot and mouth outbreak in Guildsford, does somebody know if it is only one case or if there are already multiple break-outs?
Poor animals...

Do you know if they're going to kill all cattle in a certain distance?
I saw it yesterday on BBC, but I did not have much time to see it. That's why I asked it here.

They have probably done it now. I think at the moment they are only culling all the cattle on the farm with the outbreak.
A 2 mile protection zone and a 6 mile surveilance zone have been put in place, and no cows or pigs anywhere in the UK can be moved.
I believe that is the current stance.

And sheep.
Walks in the counryside have been banned on the Isle of Man where I live. Not sure about the UK, but it seems likely.

Walking has been banned! Excellent. You can always count on knee jerk reactions in this country.
Quick, let's get some pitch forks and torches and do an angry mob walk.
Here's a quote about the outbreak. Maths explains everything:
British Cattle Vetinary Association
"Really, it's almost one virus plus one susceptible animal equals disease...

Too bad things are being handled like that. The Foot & Mouth disease is only deadly for the weaker animals. The only reason they're being killed is because of the quality of the meat and export to other countries. That's sad, I think.
When animals get it whilst they don't necessarily die it means that they're too weak to produce milk and/or the pounds fly off and subsequently they're valueless for sale as potential din-dins.
Hence the economic repercussions of an uncontrolled outbreak spreading are pretty hefty.. Ergo BBQ time pretty sharpish. Ironic really.

Effects are not as negative as you describe. It only applies during the period they have the disease, after that they recover. The disease is, as far as I know even vaccinable.
From an economic point of view you're absolutely right, but not from a human or 'animalic' point of view. That's so sad about such out-breaks.
