can somebody please tell me what the symbol ^ does in excel?

It is in a calculation that I need to work out, but I don't have a clue as to what it actually does!

googling ^ doesn't do much good, I've gone through the help section, then googled various things, but it isn't coming up with anything productive!

I believe it's cube route (spel) or something like that?

If you put =3^9 in a cell you get 19683 which is:

3 x 3 x 3 x 9 x 9 x 9 = 19683.

;o)

But you have reasons :)

It means "to the power of". 2^3 is two to the power of three or "two cubed". Or 8.

Dam beat me to it i was just about to say that

That's almost right. The ^ symbol is used to denote "to the power of", so anything like x^2 will be be x squared, x^3 is x cubed and so forth.

so 7^2-1 would be 49-1+48 then!
