Personally, for the games i'm running nowadays etc, it is more stable than xp. It doesn't run some games, but then i haven't really played them in a while and not inclined to do much about it.

I got it free from the microsoft developers network (through uni).

If buying a new computer and you want to play directx 10 games then you need it, otherwise keep xp for a bit until there is a service pack out for vista or something.

It's just your usual Microsoft 2 year rule thing. They release it and then refine the bugs when people complain. Usually most of the bugs get ironed out by 2 years after release.
