I've caught a rat in my trap, but he's no deid. What's the best way to despatch a half trapped rat? Or do I just wait for him to die?
If you've no heart to set him loose somewhere in the country then a bucket of water is your best chance... with trap and all.

is he injured? bash in the head is the best way to end it quickly. Suggestions for appropriate bashing in tools include hammer, shovel, boot, etc.
if its injured then the humane thing to do is put it out of pain quickly. so either kill it or let it nibble that block of opium you keep hidden

carrier bag and in the freezer is mine preference. The cold turns off their nervous system and they die painlessly.
good one. i grew up around stables... we always used a shovel. or a gun. happy days.
Bucket and water is looking best bet at the moment.
I've got nothing to set on top of the bucket to stop him floating out :(
This is creeping me out big time. Looks like the plan is a bucket of water and a brush to keep him under. I've just got to find some wood to put under the bucket I've trapped him in now.
Big bucket, rock, water, rock ON trap UNDER water.
Again,... only if you're too damn lazy to set him free in the nearest field.

Too injured to be set free. The trap is supposed to kill him outright, but failed.
I used a brush to hold him down. Not too pleasant.

Put a bar or two fingers behind the head (on the vertebrae there) and push while you pull back on base of tail, should dislocate the neck.

Reminds me of when I was a kid, we lived near a farm, and our cats would always bring back Rats as presents for us, some of them were bloody huge! Some of them were still alive as well if we walked out at the wrong time.

Poor Woppa. :( Poor rat. :(
Never a pleasant task.
Make sure you use plenty of detergent after you bury the dead thing. R.I.P.
Though I'm sure that Death of Rats will speed him along his next journey. SQUEAK!

Just take the rat to the nearest kebab shop. They will take him of your hands.
A brick to the head, solves the problem but is a bit messy.
Is it still attached to the trap? If it is then it wont float, so a bucket of water is a good method.
