Actually, I'll pay attention to tactics in 2 seasons when I may have a chance to actually finish above 9th place. Until then, I'll finish in the top 5 no matter what I do next season, and won't be good enough to take out Billy, Fromo or Barndog. But if Benmor, Chinese, Barndog, etc want to figure it out for me this season, then who am I to say "No."

By the way, I dispute your conclusion that I ignore tactics. I point out that there are 4 new ML teams this season. I must have done SOMETHING right other than good training and sales luck to manage top 4.

It was luck, though - I stink.

Back on topic - Benmor, I await eagerly your conclusions about why my tactics suck.

My opinions about players and player secondaries is different than other coaches, so if elected you'll see some unconventional players and subs on the roster

what do you mean here? an example please?
2008-05-27 22:44:23
I value "secondaries" above so-called primaries, I guess. I could give examples from my own squad, I suppose, but the main things I would look at as speed or tech specialists at the attacking positions, especially for late-game subs.

he uses things like defensive forwards, for example. Things most people wouldn't care or think to use (at least I wouldn't )

I like defensive strikers, and I like offensive wingbacks. Late-game substitutions, I like extremely high pace/tech strikers (with much less emphasis on striker skill). I like all strikers to have some PM and passing. Basically, players with unique skill sets, I think, don't get enough attention, particularly in nats games where there's more flexibility to use players situationally.

the ML standard mindset is:

a) I know how to train great players
b) I've been around for close to 8-10 seasons now, so I have good cash flow from training great talent. Therefore, the cycle replicates itself.

I agree, I have not really changed my tactics much at all for several seasons now. And it has been at least 2 seasons since I have reviewed another team's games. I make random changes from time to time to make my tactic a bit stronger, but that is all :)

I did have to put a ton of time into my tactics in order to get my first ML title though.

I'll get back to doing tactics when it is absolutely necessary.

After watching your match against Lakay, I'd say that these are the problems I see with your tactic...

1. On the defensive end, you have three central defenders and 2 defensive IM's that essentially spend all of their time in their own half, marking two opposing strikers. The defensive IM's play the center of the pitch, so opposing wingers have a lot of time to move with the ball before one of them moves to intercept, particularly since Lakay's wingers play wide. So your defensive players don't support the offense enough, and aren't positioned effectively enough to provide the defense you would expect from 5 players.

2. Your wingers are pinched in, so they aren't in position to make defensive plays on the opposing wingers and are more in position to be intercepted by front-to-front challenges from the opposing IM's.

3. Your strikers play extremely close together in the middle of the field. Lakay only has 3 CD's. If your strikers were positioned wider, they have more chances to break outside, then in. If opponents respond to widening your strikers by widening their defensive set, there's more opportunity for the strikers to squeeze in between.

Hrm. Cogent. Logical (I don't do enough stamina training, so my def mids get tired, and I still have the wrong belief that the "control the middle" theory of b-league works.)

Best evaluation so far. Of course, I have no idea if it is right, but you get my vote as of right now.

If I tell guac how much he sucks, will he vote for me, too?
2008-06-02 01:05:19
I might. :)

lol
2008-06-02 20:35:41

Just wanted to remind everyone that the deadline to vote for me, benmor78, is fast approaching. Do you want a manager that will insult our enemies? In the unlikely event of a loss to Nederland, wouldn't you rather have a national team coach that will remind them that even though most Americans can't locate Nederland on a map, that's what we have missile guidance systems for? If your answer is "yes," I'm your man! If your answer is "no," you're probably a latte-sipping Uncle Sam hater, and I'll wrap my boot in the American flag and apple pie before I kick you square in the ass. Then I'll go on and take control of the national team by force.
