Subject: Really dumb system

2008-09-09 03:59:07
I don't think you folks understood my point. If you aren't good enough to win a division at any league, chances are you get promoted and flogged at the next level up. Better to make sure you dominate your current competition first, even if it means putting off a promotion for a few months.

We'll never know until I get there, will we?

Have you even looked at who FESCO will be playing yet?

Will be EXTREMELY difficult to throw that game.

look, i got lucky and advanced after my first season (i got my team and midway thru the season).
i had no problems staying in my B league and in my second season i managed to tie against two very strong teams (among them red dragons who used to play in one of the A leagues). so you do not really need all that time in the C league. now if someone gets relegated back to the C league that one season in the B could be very very useful

he did that in the past though

but it is not really about this one case but in general things should be improved where they can right?

isnt change coming in the US? :)

Folks, your point about (not) being able to win your division is fine, provided all the leagues at the same level are relatively balanced and all are populated mostly by human teams. The way it is in C with usually 2-3 human teams per league creates big differences between leagues and makes getting to playoffs dependent more on your luck (which C-league you ended in) and less on your team's quality.
2008-09-09 04:15:48
Yes I did. If he advances I have a very good shot at playoffs (or maybe even autopromotion) next season. So it is not about that. To me the point of this entire discussion is that I see a major flaw in the system which can be fixed relatively easily.

>>I'm still trying to figure out why with not one but two losses in C league, you expect to think you'd be competitive in a B league.

Hey guys, do you understand that both of us had 37 points and he had better GD? And by the way, look at another stupidity of the system. He finished 1st and I finished 2nd because of the GD, but actually in our duels we played draw at my home game and I won in away game. So basically we had same points and I was better in our duel and I don't even get to the playoffs?!? Ridiculous.

I hate robots!!!

A bit of trivia: did you know that the ratio of human teams to bots is 3.1:1 in Poland and 1:1 in the US?

maybe he bought players to improve his record...maybe he had injuries to key players while playing against you. maybe you sold off best players after playing him.

and just maybe he was a better manager for the season, knowing tha GD might be a deciding factor he played at a higher level for the 14 matches.
Then again, maybe he was just lucky. Either was, you both had access to the rules.

I don't think that's the issue here. I never questioned the superiority of the winner of my league. He is better and deserves to be in B, no doubt about it. My issue is that there are many teams I perceive as weaker than mine that do get to the playoffs while I, due to my bad luck in being in this particular C-league, don't. I even see newbies sent directly to B (whether it is or is not to their advantage is a different story).

The most just promotion system would have everybody playing everybody in C, but that's of course not feasible. But why the admins and devs went for the other extreme? They spread human teams as thinly as possible over so many C-leagues. This makes the playoff chances depend more on luck and less on quality of the team.

You guys write so much about how valuable an experience being in C is. Well, I am there and I can tell you: being in C sucks. One season is more than enough to learn the details of the game. After that it's only boring games against bots. You have to be a real nut about this game (as I am) to even contemplate waiting another three months for these 2-4 games against human teams that will decide if you get a chance at promotion. My attitude would be completely different if I were in a C-league with, say, 6 human teams. That's why I speak for the reduction of the number of C-leagues and the comrpression of human players into fewer leagues. Even Gregs own stats used to justify sending newbies to B support my argument. The retention of players is better if leagues are full.

@fro
I say: kill the bots!

Says the guy who promoted to B League by finished 2nd in C.League-06 three years ago!! ;)

(Just kidding, jon!! BTW, the only reason I remember is because jonandabby got gipped on the last match of that season, and I ended up finishing above him in first. He should've won the division - but we both did still promote!!)

Just looking at the numbers, I have to say we're probably due for a contraction. Right now, we've got 343 users. That's barely half of the total number of teams (680). And most of the total teams are in C.League (512, to be exact). If C.League contracts back to 32 leagues (which it was when jonandabby and I started), you'd only have 424 total teams. A lot less bots, and a lot more competition in C.League, which would help make things a bit more interesting for folks. The top two teams in each C.League would then be in for a chance to promote.

If that user number crept back to 400 or so, it would probably be time to expand back to 680, but right now we could probably use a reduction.

Hrm, I forgot that i promoted from 2nd..... Argh. Oh, well.

Ok, contract or restructure then. WHEEE!
