sometimes one of the players in the best eleven has a score of 8 or so. clearly, this is a flawed system. has it always been this messed up, or is this new?

The best 11 was first implemented one or maybe 2 seasons ago, and it has been flawed from the start. There is no real use to looking at it unless you want a false sense of hope.

best i can tell, it looks at your league position number by position number. the highest player at that position number wins. say your player at position #8 has a mark of 35, higher than everyone else at #8. meanwhile, there may be LOTS of other players at that general postion (say midfield) who are better.

<sigh>

another half thought out idea.

It also seems to take into account the percent defending and attacking that the player did compaired to the rest of their team. So particularly in C league you get scrub teams that never get the ball across mid field and their defenders have a very high %def (30% or more), while the defenders of the team that crushed them, only do 1-2% of there teams defending. The scrub with the very large % gets on the "best eleven" despite having a much lower rating.
