That would be a 10 mil profit on 7 seasons of training, not bad at all.

Better players only mean so much. For instance, the marginal difference between, say, divine and magical or unearthly in a skill (whether it be striker, tech or pace) probably isn't enough to justify the price tag. It's all about identifying market inefficiencies (a la Moneyball) and exploiting them.

For instance, does it make sense to pay extra for a divine defender, when, if using the 3 + rule for stopping an attacker from the front, you can make do with a brilliant defender?

Dagwood, you also have to factor in opportunity costs.

i think youve oversimplified the forward vs defender thing with head on vs behind. sure an incred def can dispossess a divine tech forward head on, but good luck with that matchup just 45* off head on. and ive gotten good at tactically creating that chance

plus, if a defender fails to successfully tackle a forward, that result varies too. a failed tackle from behind with a divine def vs a divine tech will kick the ball wayyy out in random directions more, giving surrounding defenders a chance to have the ball bounce to them. whereas a failed billiant tackle from behind against a divine tech striker, the ball will practically stay right at the forwards feet

But that's the whole point. The defender doesn't have to strip the ball, all he needs to do is disrupt the play. In my experience, you can purchase higher levels of skills but there are diminishing returns.

i just told you that higher defender distrupts the play much better by kicking the ball out further
2009-09-08 22:22:27
If the defender disrupts the play sufficiently to take the attacker off a direct line to the goal, he's generally done his job. As I said, matching your expected attackers level for level in defense per tech is a waste of money, unless your tactic is such that your defenders are frequently tackling from behind.

"If the defender disrupts the play sufficiently "

i keep telling you that the higher the defensive skill, the more he will disrupt the forwards possession. your incred defenders challenging my divine tech forward will result in the ball staying right at his feet for a wide variety of angles. but if you dont want to listen thats fine with me =D lets allow this thread to get back on topic

No, your divine tech forwards would not just power through them. I've had divine tech strikers that I've trained, I'm well aware of their capabilities. You're overestimating divine defense's use, which is my point all along... older managers are mostly getting by on their money advantage without any real understanding of the intricacies of the game.

Fro is one of the few that doesnt really rely on money. I would say he focuses more on the intricacies than anyone else in the US as he has created many excel spreadsheets and trialed many different things to view the different possibilities this game has to offer, which has resulted with him being one of the best in the US for the past couple seasons.

As for me in B league, I can tell you my incredible and magical technique players do not get dispossessed unless the defender is straight on. I would argue that since nobody has defenders with magical defense, the level definitely makes a difference as when I have played my promotional matches against teams with better defenders they are able to dispossess my players much easier.

well, having owned, still owning, and playing against players in both these categories, you are simply wrong. and my forward vs your defenders is a highly hypothetical situation given historical trends ;)

and while i agree some older players (although given the current makeup of the ML, you could be called old too) are relying only on old money, im definitely not one of them. a few observations about your team and discussions you start in your general tactics forum clearly demonstrates to me how much more i know about the details of this game than you

what are these observations? maybe if you join my mentor association ill lend you a hand =D

No thanks.

"As for me in B league, I can tell you my incredible and magical technique players do not get dispossessed unless the defender is straight on"

A straight tackle, as in the striker has the ball, now the defender has the ball, yes, that's true. However, the defender has to disrupt the play, end up with the striker taking low-percentage shots, etc. You don't need divine defense to do that.
2009-09-09 19:51:17
i think its clear by now for some reason benny just cant accept that a divine defender disrupts a play better than an incredible one
2009-09-09 20:04:11
I've actually been clear all along that a perfect defender would have divine pace, divine tech, divine defending, and divine playmaking. I've also been clear that training, "useful time" or what in options trading would be called "time value," and other factors make a defender like that a practical impossibility. So effective managing is about managing the tradeoffs one must make. And my assertion is that if a brilliant defender "gets the job done," managing those tradeoffs such that you maximize some of the "secondaries" at the expense of some defending skill can be beneficial.

I'm not sure why you're so combative about this issue. I've tried to avoid insulting you but you continue to treat me dismissively and somewhat insultingly. Eventually we'll meet in a competitive match, and I suppose the question will be somewhat settled then.
