Subject: tactically speaking...

...i suck at winger tactics. i've been trying. but its just not working. up til recently i've been running a 352, but decided to switch to a 442 for a winger look and because of defensive depth. but my goals are down. i should be way up in my league this season with a chance to win it all and don't wanna lose because i'm tact-tarded...

tactics opinions people? please.

(and no, i'm not trying to offend anyone here with either the a) comment about winning my league or b)word play on retarded, thnx)

I doubt its your tactic. What does your wingers skill set look like?

BTW wingers are not as effective as they used to be. Skill set is more important than before.

well, i just completely retooled my squad last season. i'm 6/7 youngest US team(though i still mark 50+).

winger looks like this:

age 20, unearthly form
solid stamina unsatisfactory keeper
excellent pace poor defender
very good technique excellent playmaker
formidable passing excellent striker

he crosses well, but i still think its more tactic than anything. i played a barely B league team today and won 8-1 (fluke goal on a lob. 20yo gk. meh.) i feel like my other tactic would have been a much better differential.

all you taci's out there, now is the time for you to sound smart. whatTF am i doing?

He doesn't have enough passing to complete a high percentage of crosses.

I think there are several factors to look at. I'm thinking form plays a large part. For instance, I just outshot an opponent 25-2 and I only scored 3 goals in my match. My opponents keeper blocked a penalty, stopped 3 of my guys coming in 1x1, and I hit two posts. Sometimes my guys just don't have it. Sometimes the other teams step up to play you and perform well enough to keep your goals down, or they have a good tactic that measures up to yours. Somedays it's a combination.

As far as winger tacticts go, why do you think you ride the short bus? Also, what are you trying to accomplish with your tactic?

Also, think about this, does what you are trying to do make sense with how the team you are playing is set up defensively?

Lastly, I watched a little of your game, and it looked like Drwiega needs to have better Tech and Pace to be an effective winger. I didn't stick around enough to see any memorable passes from him. I'm not taking a jab at you here, but if he is getting stripped by opposing Midders, he's not even getting the chance to send the ball in.

The guys that I've played who have beaten me with really good Wing play, have had wingers who cut through me like a hot knife through butter.

Just saw your 2nd post.....I wrote all before.

Yes more tech and pace would produce more chances.

Tactically speaking, Its about putting your winger in enough space to get a pass off. Tech and pace can help you overcome tactical shortcomings.

edit: My winger played well tonight.

I've had a winger that looked a lot like yours who I replaced with a winger that had Incredible pace and outstanding passing but weak other skills

He did 3x better at least

Simply only having excellent pace is no where near enough for a winger. To get the chances he needs and the time to get the crosses off he simply needs space. Having that pace will give the space

i just feel overall like he is out of place usually. i know his tech is low. my tech training is coming at the end of NEXT season. til then, my whole team is getting pace, cause we are dreadfully slow. i feel like often he is behind the play. i play him with a mid order and have thought about playing him as an attacker.... i dunno. ii think i'm going back to my even 352... its lame, but whatever. i need to be putting up a differential.

@smirker - thanks for the look in at the match.
@llama - he's getting pace for the next season and a half.
@dag - play buno. (ha.)

I watched a few minutes of your match before my first post. I was looking at your wingers position on your first 3 or 4 possessions. Limited, but explains my response.

Buno will play against Cymru this week. Gallatin and Cumberland are being held out for the world cup.

It doesn't matter what his pace is if he can't complete enough crosses.

you could consider moving him further outside towards the touchline, and then pushing him up a bit I think with that current tactic.(basing this on just a few minutes of that game tonight)

Your winger is too wide to be effective with such low passing. Lvl 13 is a must have. You can increase his usefullness by placing him as high as your ATT, but atm I rather advise you to not use a wing.
