Subject: Us Open Cup

2010-08-06 04:41:09
Can someone please explain when teams are home vs. away for US Open Cup? Counting back now for the last five seasons, including this one, I have been the home team only 2 times out of 14 games. Maybe it is not a big deal, but I would rather play in my stadium than in the 7k capacity C league team stadium all the time.

National cups start before the first round of a new season. The number of teams that qualify for the cup is the highest possible exponential of 2. And so, in a country with 3 divisions (21 leagues, 168 teams) the number of teams participating in the cup is 128. The national cup is based on ranking points which are used to determine whether a team qualifies for the cup and determining the fixtures for the cup. This increases the importance of friendly matches, especially for bottom league teams, as the loss of ranking points may decide whether a team qualifies or not. The national ranking page of a country shows the teams that will qualify for the cup the following season, by highlighting those not qualified with a grey background.

In each round the teams will be allocated into two baskets according to their seeding based on their previous year's ranking point as of Monday of week 15, with the 1st basket containing the "strongest" 50% of teams, and the 2nd containing the "weakest" 50%. Once this is done, the pairings will then be random - i.e. any team from the 1st basket could play any team from the 2nd basket.

The teams play one match only, at the stadium of the weaker team. Matches are played in the cup system, with extra time and penalties if necessary.

basically

if your team sucks, you will play a home game sooner because you are the weak team, but chances of you losing are higher

if your team is awesome, you will play a lot of away games.

If you're unlucky like me, you'll draw a major league team in the 2nd round and have no shot to advance anywhere

I've never understood why the match isn't played in the bigger stadium every time, since the money is split and there's supposedly no home field advantage.

I made almost as much in my youth game as the cup one.

Well maybe your home fans don't support your team like mine...cause at home my team are BAMFs

Because it is the system of one of the real life english CUP (i believe the FA cup) where the strongest team always play in a single match @ home of the weakest team based on which division they are on.

It is the oldest soccer tournament and even amateurial teams get to participate hence sometimes you see those surprises in England where one of the Premier league team lose to a unknown team.

I'm sure wdp74 or Phil if he's still around in this forum can correct me if i said something wrong.

It would be very interesting but only if Sokker had some sort of home field advantage coded in, something tied to supporter mood and fan club size, along with team history, maybe?

I'm guessing the idea of home field advantage has been tossed around a bunch already though.

dio-nisio, for sure that is wrong about the FA cup

My game tonight was hilarious!

Mine too!

2-2 draw against a similar strength club playing with only 10 men.

won 3-2 in Extra Time. (It was even then as they had a guy get his 2nd yellow in the 100 min.)

Mine was scoreless the first 50 minutes.

I finally broke the ice, 2 mins later I pick up a red card.

The rout was on thou as we kicked in 9 goals a man down. LOL

I would like to add, I probably had more posts than goals and I'm sure out shooting % was higher outside the penalty box than inside it.

Good news about the cup this season is that I will not sacrifice training my youths to win it. I will focus on winning the ML.

Great!

You have knocked me out of the cup 2 or 3 seasons in a row.

Hilarious? Not quite. I would call it ridiculous: I outshoot my opponent 19:3 and lose 1:2. Besides: My team has 5 fouls ... and 4 result in a card (one of them red).

The guy who just spoon fed me my lunch had one player named Fuk and another was Wuss, other than that there was nothing remotely funny about that freaking game.
