Subject: Reaching 1000 active users

2011-01-05 18:46:09
You can find new users on the USA stats pages
2011-01-05 18:54:56
yea, go to USA page>statistics>new users list

we need to stop just talking about it and jump into action.
1. pick someone to be official USA tutor (has to be plus user to see statistics new users list?)
2. all agree on the messages that the tutor sends to every new person, maybe also a post on the new trial plus guestbook to catch attention again
3. set up a thread in the newbie forum for new users who actually get the message to go to and post in about getting a mentor
4. have a list of people willing to be mentors and keep track of who has who

these things shouldnt be hard to do, someone needs to step up for the tutor job first and foremost

I will be the tutor on the condition that somebody (JAMP) gets the substance of that message put together, I'll revise it if I think it needs it and post it here for any further suggestions.

Then we should start an association for people who want to be mentors or just help with this. If I get busy with real life or just need help I can post there. We can also use that forum to sort out mentors.

I have to go to work now but when I get back I will start an association called USA mentors forum or something like that and see who wants to join.

Anybody else wants to be tutor or start that association or whatever that's fine too, I will assist when I can.

Have you looked at the auto message?

edit:

If you type in {tx_23} in the subject area and {tx_24} in the text area, and send it to yourself, it should show you the message :)

is that automatically sent to all new users?

i think we should, on top of that, make a short and sweet one for US users that points them in the direction to our newbie USA forum, tells them to post something in a designated thread to say hello and ask for a mentor there
2011-01-05 21:37:34
Yes

I agree
2011-01-05 22:35:17
i don't know if the message is sent automatically, i'm still waiting for an answer in the MOD forum.

On the "have to have PLUS": i'll check into it.
2011-01-05 22:46:34
If you want an association created for this effort then I suggest you create one.
2011-01-06 06:10:40
ok I will, just have to puzzle out how to do that.

agree that we should try to have a US specific message too, I can send that one manually if I need to, shouldn't take too much effort.

Ok, that association is set up, it's called US Mentors and Tutors Forum or something very similar.

Please apply to join if you are interested in:

1) Being a mentor

2) Helping to answer questions, assuming I am tutor and I get some question I need help with, I would like to have some people to bounce it off of.

Dag, that auto message is ok I like the detail and animated gifs, but there's some serious broken english going on, like this under "setting squad":

Select players and position orders, set tactic for the match and save. Set orders (conditionals, substitutions, set pieces) See The match. Related with training session: Max. number of players with same order: 5 for [DEF], 5 for [MID], 3 for [ATT] to get training session effect. Best result in training session for each skill/position order played: Keeper for GK [only GK], Playmaking and passing for [MID], Striker for [ATT]. Rest of skills may be trained with same result with [ATT],[MID],[DEF] position order. In substitutions: player-in gets position order from player-out.

now maybe I'm drunk, ok I am drunk, but that's barely making sense to me and I know what they are trying to say.

we should send something real short and sweet aimed at US users, say hi, add a link to slammy's newbie guide, another to the US forums: newbie, Sokker USA, and then let them know they can ask public questions or ask for a mentor in the newbie forum, introduce themselves wherever, and ask private questions through the tutor, which I guess is going to be me.

Two paragraphs max, nobody wants to read a small novel. I'll compose something tomorrow and post it here for comment.

Ok, let me in.
2011-01-06 17:11:34
yep ive applied as well.

ill make a thread in the newbie forum for new people to say their first hello in
2011-01-06 18:17:15
down to help, just applied. slammmy, great guide.
btw, despite the wealth of information in the forums...they aren't exactly very user friendly for the average user. we need something like an interactive tutorial (ie. "click on the player icon, this is your team, now click on the phone, this is where you can place ads for friendlies, etc" or a step-by-step guideline for setting up a team and that kind of stuff. maybe it would be easier for a new user if the menus weren't so f-d up - take a look at the players icon and the training icon.... how is a new user supposed to differentiate those two???

also... pointing a user to the rules is ridiculous. besides is length... it's cryptic at best, and needs to be read a few times to pull some meaning out of it. like you pointed out, orders are stupid and wayy too confusing. it took me a few seasons before i fully understood training, training effectiveness, mid vs att orders etc.
2011-01-06 19:35:34
yeah I think Slammy's guide does a good job of covering most of what you are pointing out except this:

we need something like an interactive tutorial (ie. "click on the player icon, this is your team, now click on the phone, this is where you can place ads for friendlies

the auto message that Dagwood mentioned is doing something like this I think, but needs to have the translation polished, maybe at some point I will look into that, but for now it will have to be on the new user to ask for help with this kind of thing on a case by case basis I think.

so for now at least, I'll send them a link to the newbie guide and offer public and private ways to ask for help or a mentor.

I'm writing the welcome message, how do I make a link say "Slammy's Newbie Guide" instead of "http...."?
