Subject: Cup meaningless? A discussion...

2007-04-07 00:07:54
Since we've got two very vocal proponents of the "cup is meaningless" camp in jonandabby and islander (who's arguments are so strong they have to result to limp wristed insults), I wanted to see what other people think.

See, my theory is that those people that claim that the cup is meaningless are typically just trying to set up for their eventual loss... particularly since the people who tend to say that (ahem, jonandabby and islander) are also so vocal about telling the community what wonderful managers they are. Seeing as how the cup is almost always going to bring you more gate revenue than friendlies, and a cup loss is necessarily going to bring about a drop in supporter mood, claiming the cup is meaningless is facially absurd. That's not even mentioning the fact that B league teams like islander's get to potentially show up upper league talent, as well as the managerial complexities of managing a deep cup run while maintaining a competitive series team.

Anyway, cup: meaningless, or that's just something that losers say?

Man, just let it go...

We need a new Cup matches thread now :(

The cup might be meaningless, to a Major League team.
Why?
Well, either because they already won it once, or because being champion of the most difficult league in all USA is more important then a cup where they might face a team that didn't have any overly difficult teams to defeat, for say if all the major teams faced each other and knocked each other out already.

Other then that, a cup might be meaningful to a lower division team, as they have smaller stadiums, so home league matches wouldn't attract that much money, and they'll get more gate income that way

The Cup has always been meaningful to my team.
2007-04-07 02:03:15
Am I missing something?

Why is winning the cup less prestiges then winning the ML?

I don't care how little the cup pays. The ML winner and the CUP winner should be considered the best 2 teams in the country.

"The cup might be meaningless, to a Major League team."

Well, what you're saying is not that the cup is meaningless, but that the cup is relatively less valuable to a ML team (potentially). I'm not disputing that. But if the cup were truly meaningless, teams would be actually throwing their cup matches.

This is the kind of pure idiocy I'm talking about:

"Honestly, I feel its serious stupidity to sacrifice a league result for a national cup that just interferes with fun friendly leagues to begin with.

I don't know who I'm drawing next week for an opponent, but I'll be of half a mind to throw it just to make sure the HA Cup starts on time. At the very worst I'll throw the following round so it can start in week 5

I'd much rather be in a fun friendly league then going an extra week in the NC and then playing random BS friendlies the rest of the season.

But that's just me. I'm sure not everyone agrees."

when youve got high talent super expensive trainees you cant really afford to not train them for a block of 4 weeks in a row when its crunch time in the cup. theres only a few of us in that boat that can claim theyve bought a few young players for multi-millions that arent good enough to start on their A team - me being one of them - and if they arent trained an entire quarter season or more it could cost a team many 100ks.

in my personal history, when i went all the way to the finals twice in a row, i had mid trainees that could win games for me that were 21-22 years old marking in upper 30s, PLUS the matchup system didnt force difficult games too early on for high seeded teams. since then, my economy has matured and i can train a handful of 17-19yolds that really arent ready to compete at a high level but will earn me a ton of money (much more than the cup will make me) due to their potential.

to me, i dont view the cup as "meaningless", id love to bring in the hardware, and (not to boast) really have the ability to. but choosing to train will bring me more long term success. i couldve spent my money on already very nice players in their late 20's, but that would only make myself better in the short run, and my money would depreciate rather than appreciate

one of these upcoming seasons when my current squad of youngins mature (if i dont pawn them and replace them beforehand =P ) ill definitely go for gold again

I think it's ridiculous to throw it. I treat it as any other week, personally. I train strikers, so my top 3 play in the league, and second 3 play on wednesdays, whether that be a Cup or a Friendly. All of my other players stay the same, because I don't want to waste the money to field an entire second string squad.

That being said, I know my team doesn't have the talent to win it, but I do try to get as far as I can. And I'll continue to to that in the future. I don't need my best strikers to win the match, and that was proven by my trainee with Weak striker skill that scored 4 goals in his first game, ever.

Just ignore him and he'll go away for a few weeks, then get bored, show up and talk smack, then disappear again when he starts getting ignored again... its an ongoing cycle. :)

Hey, it's not my fault your collective friendly leagus sucks and hold no interest to yours. I mean what kind of maturity is this "Fromaster's Home Locker Rooms Have Tampon Dispensers". WTF is that?

Meanwhile, my friendly league does hold interest to most of us in it. It's 16 people all from the same hockey sim most of us came from. It's a lot more fun playing friends from outside this game - win or lose with the B lineup - then sacrifice training just to advance in the US Cup.

The only benefit to the US Cup is the paydays - which btw are gimped to begin with because 3 times out of 4 the host team has the smaller stadium. Brilliant.

Just to explain, last season the HA Sokker Cup had two divisions of eight teams. Additionally their was 4 rounds of playoffs after a single pass through the league.

The end result was everyone finished in a specific place (1 through 16) based on how they did in the playoffs.

All while never having to deviate in the slightest bit from training.

In the end, it's more fun for me to play people I know, then people I don't.

As far as calling that idiocy, I suggest you again, mind your own store, because it's pretty empty. I'm winning matches. Are you?

Didn't think so.

I find it rather ironic that for a person who thinks the Cup is important, you didn't have a Cup match last Wednesday.

Then again, this is benmor78 we're talking about. Oh...Oh...I scored 5 goals on Bogan last Sunday! Yeah well, you also gave up 6. BFD.

Riiightt... the only point of friendlies is training. There is a competitive aspect to the cup. Saying it's meaningless is stupid. Saying that you're going to throw the cup because "it interferes with fun friendly leagues" is beyond stupid.
2007-04-07 03:09:44
that's your opinion - you're entitled to it.

I've got my priorities: league --> friendly league (assuming it stays the one I'm in) --> and then Cup.
2007-04-07 03:11:15
This season, it's besides the point anyway. I drew the Cats next week, and he's obviously not training pace right now.

I'm getting my ass handed to me whatever team I put out there.

"that's your opinion - you're entitled to it.

If your prioritize a friendly league over the cup, maybe Guac needs to do some more mentoring.
