Subject: Cup meaningless? A discussion...

2007-04-09 02:31:32
Touche Islander, you got me there. But that comment was not just aimed at you.

I haven't been here long enough to have much comment, on topic this topic that is. However, in other games I make an effort to win in the cup as long as I can, but without losing training along the way. A bot in my league tonight got my B-Team trainees so I could save my starters for Wednesday (HT, as an example). I do try to juggle my lineups to extend both runs as long as I can.

So, I guess that means I think the Cup does have meaning, but I will not give up training or my league goals to try to slightly extend my run. Once I am out I do usually join a friendly Cup, but I never pull starters to play in those games over league games.

look, I'm not annoyed at anyone but benmor who just can't seem to let this all go. His second thread was completely uncalled for imo. This one was borderline.

Blame me for fighting back if you like. I'll take that blame, but I won't be apologetic.

I'll happily let this all die now, assuming he does also. If not? Then you will all get to read more back and forth insults for another week or whatever.

Actually, you know what. I'm done with this.

It's been going on for a week now, there's not much more fresh to be said.

have fun benny boy. I'll just keep on winning, and maybe, just maybe, I'll pull a qualifier in A02.

"So, I guess that means I think the Cup does have meaning, but I will not give up training or my league goals to try to slightly extend my run. Once I am out I do usually join a friendly Cup, but I never pull starters to play in those games over league games."

Which was my point all along. I think you do what you can to win any competitive match, within reason. I think to say "the cup is meaningless, I don't care if I win or lose" is specious, sour grapes, and trying to diminish the accomplishments of managers who do manage to go far in the cup.

"Hell, the entire topic title of this thread was mocking my opinion. I won't stand for that,"

I'm sorry I hurt your feelings, islander. I should have been more respectful of the HA Cup, the only friendly league in the US with two playoff stages. I mocked you, and you didn't stand for it. I apologize.

is islander forum banned or why is it so quiet? :P
2007-04-15 17:35:40
He is not banned.
2007-04-15 17:37:05
wow..... less than 35 seconds for a response.....and he isnt even from USA!lol :P

35 secs is a bad result - It should have been near 20secs. Writing my post and checking if Islander is banned or not took some time:)

For those of you who have missed the excitement of me and islander fighting and islander crying like a sissy girl, I thought I'd revive this old thread.

Now that's the Christmas spirit!
2007-12-24 13:32:00
me and Islander have been getting along too well lately.
2007-12-24 16:11:36
LOL. Merry Christmas to you too.

Since this post my mentality towards friendlies has definitely changed. I sit starters for older players, don't even watch the matches...although I'll watch the next few as I work on a different formation to be implemented next season.

Mentality towards the Cup? Not so much. It's still pretty meaningless. The seasons I've done well in the Cup have not been because I've been playing my starters every week. I lost early this season to a very good B league team having only one real striker to play due to a red card/training situation.

edit: the Cup is good for extra weekly income, that's about it.

When 6 out of 8 ML teams make a run for it and the top 2 teams in the ML (might be temporarily) make it to the final, the cup has meaning.
2007-12-24 16:52:30
The Cup should have meaning for most teams. If not just from trying to win and earning some extra cash then from trying to get some matches against more difficult opponents, seeing how you match up against teams from divisions above you, and even learning a few things.
2007-12-24 17:12:19
I agree with the cash, but the matchups themselves are meaningless when they aren't starting 11s.

Just because I beat jonandabby and dagwood in the cup last season with partial starters or whatevever gives me no delusions I can beat their starting 11's.

it is what it is. It demonstrates the ability to be a good tactical manager to some degree (because those guys do beat other good teams with their lineups) but other then that...not much.
