All the british teachers and lecturers that i've ever had during my school and uni years have said this quote at some point, why is this? Is a love of beer/whisky written into the DNA of brits?

On a serious point, yes it is. You have to build up a tolerance for it over the years. If you look at non beer countries, they hardly have to drink anything and that's them out for the count!
