Subject: [NT] Friendlies

2009-06-18 18:29:53
hi everyone, sorry i have been quiet but things have been a little difficult irl.

i think the lost to aussie falls completely on my shoulders as i didn't attempt to do much else other than make sure we were fielding a decent squad.

now as we are out from the mini cup i'd like to start playing some younger up and comers....is everyone ok with this? please let me know.

also if you could all update any players that would be super....i am having some problems with loading the database from time to time but i will look into more shortly.

i am welcome to any thoughts or suggestion...please send me a skmail.

Vince Lemieux is potentially for sale and if I can be online I will buy him back and train pace and defending.

Vince Lemieux is not for sale. The manager is just showing off his skills. And he is getting good training.

I am OK with younger. A lot of the A squad can not gain much more with the extra training.

Do you want me to send you the skills by PM?

I usually like Canadians but I know you can do a good job, I saw your post in the Mexican forum.

The elections are long enough as they are. We're not going to start campaigning 2 months early.

I understand. But I hope you can appreciate that we don't want to go through 7-8 weeks of managers seeing how open our minds are.

Interesting matches the last 2 weeks. A unique approach using hybrid strikers in the OM positions. Tactic was solid in both matches.

A good performance against BiH. Was shocked Sewell missed that chance in the 37th. The freekick in the 63rd (I think) was pretty cool - kinda of a little roll pass.

Bit of an unfortunate result against Wales. Canada wasted a number of nice opportunities, while Singh was pretty shaky in the Canadian goal. Still an entertaining match to watch. :)

All set for the Bulgaria friendly.

It's U24 ... we don't have a keeper 24 or under, so both sides are going to play a 25 year old.

Had to make a number of roster moves to field a line-up. Groping a little here ... don't have much idea of the skills of the players I've added, aside from watching them play U21. Going to have to work on collecting some data so the coaching staff has a little better idea what they are working with. :)

It looked pretty ugly early on. :) But the lads steadied the ship, and in the end, probably deserved something from the match.

When U21 came in, it seemed to me it greatly reduced the number of friendlies with `custom` groundrules. Those kinds of matches seem to be on the rise again this season, as most every opponent I`ve talked to has some scheme in mind. Often, he who makes the groundrules wins, and that was the case today.

I thought there was a good chance Bulgaria would use a winger. I went with 4 at the back anyway - mostly based on the personnel I wanted to use. Might have been ok if Lapiere had enough pace to cover his flank, but that dude apparantly needs to spend some time on a treadmill. I asked WAY to much of him. It didn`t help that us using a 25 yr old in goal allowed Bulgaria to use their regular starting winger. Anyway, not properly covering the Bulgaria attacking flank was a serious tactical flaw that cost the match.

I decided to attack with some width. 2 strikers would have been better (especially given the defense Bulgaria used), but I didn`t like Parise`s form, and hadn`t remembered TJ Caraiman of NK Duga Resa (who has since been called up). I remember the U21s lacking tech down the wing, so I tried to `brace` the wing player with McMillan. Kinda worked, but not to the degree I`d hoped.

I was dissapointed with Leopold. His miss in the 62nd minute was GHASTLY, and he wasted a few other glorious opportunities. The other player who got in the coach`s doghouse was Dulic - he had 3 pass outlet options on his side of the field, all of whom were routinely wide open, yet most times he intentionally kicked the ball out of play.

I was guessing at player skills, and seem to have guessed wrong wtih Hamedani and Lightfoot. I swapped them in minute 60, and both seemed to immediately come to life.

Anywho. The problems today I feel were mostly due to poor (or no) player information. And despite that, the team played fairly well and could easily have drawn or better. I`ll start beating the brush for some scouting, and we`ll improve the next time the young lads on are on the pitch.

We are set for Serbia. It's a rather rag-tag crew on our part. Not risking anyone who might be important in next week's rematch against NZ. May not be pretty - Serbia is a quality opponent. :)
