Subject: [NT] Friendlies
Underway against Slovenija.
I expect we’ll see a 442 from them. They went through the World Cup using the same formation - with perhaps some minor tweaks here or there. Unlikely they’ll change things up for a friendly.
I’m not super confident in our tactic. 442 with a diamond midfield. It’s not what I’d use if this were a must win game. It’s not really designed to exploit weaknesses in the opponent’s approach. More trying to emphasize our strengths - particularly on offense.
I expect we’ll concede some goals. With only 1 defensive mid (and he’s placed more offensive then usual) there will be more gaps and cracks for Slovenija to squeeze the ball through. Adamovic doesn’t make too many mistakes around the net.
So hopefully our offensive approach will yield some goals. 4 slick midfielders should provide some decent ball movement. 1 striker down the middle (attacking what I perceive is a hole), while the other attempts to get wide of the defense, hopefully gaining the zone - perhaps even getting a shot or a short pass off to his mate.
The opponent tactic does not defend line throws well - so most throws are intended to stay wide. Wang takes penalties. The freekick taker is open - we have a number of good freekick takers on the pitch. Barrera covers the back-line in case of red card.
Again, if it were a must win we’d see Parker ahead of Madden. Madden’s pace is improving, but he’ll still look sluggish. Manohar starts ahead of Biron due to significant form disparity. W Lavrynenko not starting as the strikers will likely need to break a tackle to get a shot, and his mediocre tech isn’t up to that challenge.
Line-Up
Madden
Dehere, Sebrango, Fichaud, Bradshaw
Iginla, Barrera, Renda, Caron
Manohar, Wang
Bench
Parker
Malhotra
Nesta (75 - Renda)
Biron (60 - Manohar)
W Lavrynenko (80 - Wang)

I wasn't really expecting that. Aside from one suspended defender, this was Slovenija's World Cup line-up. Fairly big drop in ratings one week to the next for them. Our ratings were better then I expected.
Was nice making someone else do the chasing for a while. Not just the midfield, but the defense also moved the ball fairly well, keeping possession and carrying the play. 4 fouls by Canada - if I'm not mistaken, they were all committed on Adamovic. :P
Madden looked a little sluggish, but had a nice game. Thought all 4 defenders played well. Barrera did a nice job in defensive midfield - made more tackles then I expected (good to see his knock is minor). Iginla and Caron both provided some great service and showed more creativity then in recent matches. Renda utilized his speed to cover a lot of ground in the middle, and made quick & good decisions. A lot of woodwork rung in this match. Both starting strikers played well. Thought Biron brought a lot of spark off the bench, tho his finishing could have been better (1 for 8). Lavrynenko didn't do much with his 10 minutes.
The U21 World Cup is slated to begin next week. I haven't checked the thread lately - I expect the draw will be held once today's World Cup matches are completed.

Slovenija Stats
A few interesting tidibits in there. The team overall had a good day moving the ball, but there were a few notable extremes. Caron and Dehere with very good passing numbers. Fichaud and Bradshaw also quite respectable. A few at the other end as well - Renda and Sebrango a little sub-par.
Wang tried a number of passes with little success. Essentially all of these were to his strike mate, many of them headed balls (target-man style). Not high % passes, but he often does a little better.
Tackling numbers don't look as good on the right side of the pitch, but that has a lot to do with who they were marking. As mentioned before, Barrera had a better then expected day tackling.

Note: should be 100% (rather then 1) in stop% and save% for Madden.
(Stop % is unconverted opponent shots / totals shots. Save % is saves / shots on target).

We needed this win badly wtg Seca. You mentioned this was a best Slovenian line up and those 11 menaged 9 shots against Poland week ago and only 2 today not to mention much better statisticaly played. Not sure if Poland played his best team but I am sure you didnt play best 11 today, right?
There was a funny situation where Wang and Slovenian keeper stand still with ball between them.
Iginla had a nice cross for I think second goal.
Hard to tell who is MVP for this game, they all played his best.

The win is nice, but doesn't do much to lessen the disappointment of the World Cup. Hopefully we get some good results in the U21 WC to help build some momentum for next season.
It wasn't the best Poland team they faced last week. :) Slovenija hasn't looked all that sharp this season. I may have over-estimated them. They gave both England and Scotland a hard time in qualifying. Think they over-achieved some last season.
There were actually two occasions where the ball just lay in the 6 yard box and nobody went after it for a moment or two. Kind of odd. :)
Like you said, a lot of good performances. My nod for man of the match would be Fichaud. Did a great job covering Adamovic, and was fairly smart with the ball.

Barrera got a 5 days injury. I am going to rest him tomorrow (to avoid a severe injure) and I may play him (in a corner of the field) next Wednesday.
How much is the possibility of injure if he is playing slightly injured?

i tried it once and regreted it so i wouldn't recommend it
How much training Barrera is going to get if he plays only the NT friendly?
It's not written in the rules, but from I've "heard" training % are something like this:
Max training: 100%
Single Match:
League: 95%
Friendly: 90%
NT 33%
If you double up, you can get to 100%. Ie.
League + NT = 100% (not 128%)
Nowhere in the rules does it say a slightly injured player is more likely to get injured (that is an HT thing). Some will tell you that if an SI player is injured the injury will be more severe - I don't believe that either (I think it just looks worse because the new injury is added to the existing injury).
If it was me, I'd probably rest Barrera today, but would certainly play him Wednesday. If you are worried about him, make a "hide" tactic where one player never leaves a defensive corner of the field and stick him there.
PS - I was glad to see it was only a slight injury. Barrera has played very well the past season & a half and is the type of player I really like. Hope his training stays on track. :D

He is going to be a middie FK stile he still is not quite ready but if everything goes alright I am going to switch training to complete him.
I am going to play him in the friendly in a far away corner (he is going to be a luxury spectator).

I have no delusions of proceeding past the group stages of the U21 WC. I've arranged a friendly with Macedonia for Week 14.
Likely not a very interesting match this weekend. Our line-up is focussed on getting some of our "prime" and younger players out on the pitch again. The following players are expected to dress:
Joey Biron - 22 yrs, 16 caps, Valiant FC
Myles Boissieres - 20 yrs, 8 caps, Partizan 74
Ruben Caron - 24 yrs, 38 caps, HL Football
Karl Dehere - 24 yrs, 29 caps, Kamloops Lakers
Felix Iginla - 26 yrs, 67 caps, Black&Oil
Wyn Lavrynenko - 23 yrs, 16 caps, in Austria
Vince Lemieux - 20 yrs, 11 caps, Real Hawkes
Boris Madden - 23 yrs, 7 caps, Magnificent Bastards
Malcolm Malhotra - 24 yrs, 16 caps, in Poland
Adrian Manohar - 24 yrs, 20 caps, Hajduk Burnaby
Dwayne Renda - 24 yrs, 17 caps, Surrey Crackheads
Zachary Sebrango - 22 yrs, 14 caps, in Poland
Luke Singh - 20 yrs, 4 caps, Fianna FC
Satinder Touchette - 22 yrs, 13 caps, Partizan 74
Gonzalo Verville - 21 yrs, 16 caps, Snowhares
Paul-Arnaud Zanardi - 22 yrs, 6 caps, in Poland
The two most likely to not see action are Singh and Touchette.

It had slipped my mind that my club plays Black&Oil this weekend. I feel a little uncomfortable putting their best player in harms way for a meaningless friendly. So Black&Oil will instead be sending Gaspare Ferranti, 22 yrs, 3 caps. I think he's in his 3rd consecutive season of horrendous form. Perhaps a little NT action will get him pointed the right direction. :)
Should be underway in a moment or two.
Fairly standard 442 from us. Flank defenders more involved in the offense then usual. Sebrango is well suited to sneaking in - decent passing and enough pace to get back into position if things don’t work out. Lemieux-Ferranti is the key midfield position IMO. They have the main distribution decision, and potentially the most difficult pass to make (to the winger).
Line-Up
Madden
Dehere, Zanardi, Malhotra, Sebrango
Renda, G Verville, Lemieux (Ferreanti - 50), Caron
Manohar (Boissieres - 60), W Lavrynenko (Biron - 60)
Verville covers the back-line in case of red card (except Dehere - I'm one order short). Should Madden get hurt after all the subs are used, Renda will don the gloves. W-Lav takes penalties. Caron responsible for freekicks.
