funny thing is one season is quiet the next one is real bad then quiet... etc etc

First game tonight - first win: 6-0. Had a pretty standard formation and tactics. Didn't really notice much bad but I'm likely to never set up goal opportunities from the wings.

I know... last season was almost perfect, almost no injuries.

Yeah that really won't happen until you start getting a good midfield. You'd really need to be looking at very good+ passing as minimum for a decent cross every now and then.
