I saw a cracker posted by Foxy in International
USA

Scotland
Not only would the banter be great but we'd have a real chance of qualifying too.

Not bad Reekie, would be a cracker against England.
Dissapointing to just miss out on pool 3. But we'll take what we get. Were going to have 2 difficult games at least. We are used to being the underdog, so not concerned about that. If we have to go smash and grab tactics in any of the games, so be it.

It saddens me that the height of Scottish sporting ambition is to beat the English, much the same that as a Rangers fan, I hate nothing more than the "as long as we beat that lot, nothing else matters" mentality.
I don't know if it's a British thing, due to our island status and previous strength in the world, that we can't seem to look beyond our borders, but I just see it as shortsighted, persecution complex nonsense.
I also think it's one of the main reasons most of our sportsmen, especially our footballers, don't get anywhere near their potential. If more Scots played in Germany, Italy or Spain, our national team would be a million times better.

I think your being shortsighted to immediately come out with that "persecution complex nonsense" regarding Scotland & England.
I said before, my ambition is to get out of the group, which won't be easy, then after that I will aiming to win it. We aren't the strongest but underdogs can win sometimes. What part of that lacks ambition?
Why can't you accept its local rivalry and not a complex knee 'jerk' response. I get the same when my pool team the "Croft" meet our local rivals "Byron" or "Murdos". Doesn't stop us trying to win the whole league, which we did last season. Its human nature to want to beat your local rival, plain and simple. As far as im aware no persecutions ever happened between these pubs, but the exact same feeling is there, on a lower scale, but exists.
I could go on to local town rivalry. e.g. Oldmeldrum hates my local town, Inverurie because it was decided the A96 would go through there instead despite it being smaller at the time. Beat that, rivalry installed by a road building decision...Inverurie went on to become the 2nd fastest growing town in Europe, only behind Milton Keynes.

we might have been better going through oldmeldrum would of saved having to close the windows every time you travel the a96
Yep, the Piggery and Slaughterhouse at Inverurie can pong a bit. Obviously some of the locals aswell.
I should have started my post by saying that it wasn't aimed personally at you.
I genuinely believe this is a wider issue that affects Scotland as a whole, which I brought up in response to earlier posts.
I agree that it's human nature to want to beat your rivals, but it's shortsighted to concentrate only on doing that, which seems to be the case here far more than anywhere else. That's all I was saying.

I didn't take it personally, I just responded to your opinion. I here what your saying, the old adage of concentrating on one game at a time works best.
I think its a symptom of the Scottish fierce competitiveness. Ive seen tiddlywinks generate into farcical scenes before. Accusations of winks tampering and allsorts.
* disclaimer:- I admit Ive never played tiddlywinks, this was purely for example purposes.

well, to be honest, as a "semi-Scot" who has lived in 8 countries and experienced many cultures, i find the Scottish-English rivalry fantastic!
It's great to have a rivalry that really gets under your skin and into your psyche, it's something to get passionate about, to give you an extra lift, just as long as it doesn't get nasty.
Of course some other countries also have great rivalries (e.g. New Zealand Australia at Rugby), but others don't. And living in such countries, you quickly find that there is something missing, these places tend to be less passionate about there sports, it matters that little bit less to the locals.
Also being a Scottish expat, its always fantastic going to a bar in the other side of the world to watch a scotland england game (be it rugby, football or curling). there's bound to fellow scots and englishmen there and the banter is always friendly and fun
