i got 1 decent guy and fired 1 of the other 2,join in guys this game is great, and like culture says has so many aspects to take on board.
You worked out the best way to train players?
I have no clue and nobody is answering the gazillion threads I've been posting in help and in England.

Any penalty for playing players out of position.?
My team is very unbalanced, having lots of PG and C but only 1 each of P Fwd and S Fwd, (and they're both mediocre at best).
1 brilliant player in the draft (4,680 salary)

No penalty.
From what I've been reading, pick players based on what skills suit which positions, and ignore what the computer tells you their best position is.
That player you got has a higher wage than my best guy. Must be good.
I'll post some more stuff I got from the forums.

Training
You will never have more than 3 games in a week. Usually this is 2 league games and one scrimmage. A game is 48 minutes long, unless there are overtimes. So during a training week there are 144 (48 x 3) minutes of playing time available for training each week.
Training is based on minutes played at a position, not on games played. A player may play more than one position in a game, so only some of his time might be credited to training. The Weekly Stats menu will help you track minutes played each week, once you have played games.
Theoretically, you could split the 144 minutes among 3 players. But assuming you want to win your league games, your best player at a position will play more than 48 minutes a week (perhaps 60 to 80 minutes in the two league games). He won't play in scrimmage. His backup then might have 16 to 36 minutes in the two league games. So he would need some more time from the scrimmage. And you would be able to get some minutes for a 3rd player, but probably not 48 minutes. You might want to develop a younger player who can benefit from some of the extra training.
There is no benefit for training purposes of playing more than 48 minutes per week, so even if the 3rd player doesn't get the full training, the other two players would not get further benefit.
You could also train a player "out of position". Most (all) of the skills used by a C are useful to a PF. So you could use one of your starting or backup PF as a 3rd C trainee.
Playing minutes are also important for Game Shape and Stamina. A player who plays between 48 minutes and 90 minutes in a week, regardless of position, will improve or maintain his game shape. If he plays too much or too little, his game shape will deteriorate. The further outside the range, the greater the loss.
A player who plays less than 48 minutes in a week, regardless of position, will have his stamina deteriorate. Again, just missing 48 won't hurt too much. Playing 0 will hurt it. Stamina can only be improved by training stamina. If a player plays more than 48 minutes, it will simply stay the same.
Because of the Game Shape and Stamina (and salary) it probably doesn't make sense to have more than 12 to 14 players on your roster. If you have more, their game shape and stamina will suffer.
edit : just one little correction - player needs only 24 minutes per week in order to avoid stamina decrease...

Culling your squad
I would fire the ones with wages less 2200. I doubt that they would sell for more than 1 weeks wages, so I would not bother trying to sell them.
Then decide what you want to train, and sell anyone over 20 in those positions and buy trainees if needed.
Apart from that.....keep a bit of money for upgrading the arena, when you start filling it.

DMI: The overall player index, DMI, gives a very rough indication of how good your player is. This is a good way to check that your player is getting training, but is otherwise a lot less meaningful than it first appears. Be warned!
Best Position: As with the DMI, this is a very rough guideline, and some would even say a meaningless one. You should play your players at the positions that make the most sense to the team, regardless of whether it is his listed position.

I woould say pretty awesome.....though those last 3 stats are annoyingly low. Still, nice player :)
Woohoo, playing my first game, a scrimmage, and I've come from behind. Winning 15-14.
:)
My best draftee was:
Douglas MacIvor, 18, 6"8, wage: $4140
Jump Shot: average Jump Range: respectable
Outside Def.: inept Handling: pitiful
Driving: inept Passing: inept
Inside Shot: average Inside Def.: respectable
Rebounding: mediocre Shot Blocking: respectable
Stamina: average Free Throw: respectable
A power forward, apparently :)
Handling is low but everything else is pretty sweet.

OK, the big question.
Whats the game engine like?
hattrickesque abstract randomness or in depth interaction of various skills?

Have to be honest, I've only played one game so couldn't tell you. BUT it looks good, and because it's not a footy game I have to pay more attention and there is more stuff to learn, which is something I like.
It looks really good.
I recommend it, unlike footstar.
Give it a bash, you can always quit.
Until I've trained up my players, and screwed around with tactics for at least a season I won't know too much about the Game Engine.
I suppose I could ask on the forums.
:)
Apparently there is over 10,000 lines of coding in the ME, that's what 1 of the owners / devs posted somewhere.....so I'd imagine it's quite good.
Also, they did a complete server move in under 24 hours.
Which really impressed me. They are highly organised, so I'm banking on the ME being good.
