Subject: PC Problem

Here's one for all you computer genius's

When I watch my match these days I dont see the smooth animation that I used too. The screen is very jumpy and it's like watching a video by pressing the pause button followed by play followed by pause etc etc.

I always know when a goal is scored as once the shot is taken the screen freezes and comes back again with the scorer running back with the ball picture above his head. If the shot goes wide or whatever I see that, albeit in a jumpy manner.

Other sites give me problems too, you tube for example. I can hear the music/lyrics fine but the pictures are again jumpy, like watching photographs rather than moving pictures. Once a (for example) 4 min song is finished the video is still playing at around 2.38 or whatever but like I say, the musical side I hear fine.

I've got the latest flash and have constantly deleted it and re-downloaded it again for the past few months aswell as doing the usual cookie deleting etc.

Anyone any idea's?

Probably worth mentioning that I've had the same pc since 1999. Is it just coming to the end of it's natural life? no other problems though so maybe not?

I'd say delete any junk you don't need, frees up space.

With YouTube: I have a problem where the video takes ages to load, but it works fine.

ally what OS are you running?

If its before Vista then press start click control panel. Once in your control panel click on add remove programs. It will then list all the programs - you can sort them on last accessed. Get rid of everything that you think "wtf is that?" which has also never been run for ages.

Your computer might be old but if all yo use it for is surfing and word processing etc then you could also take the best measure. IF you have your initial software disks then backup your files, format the HDD and install everything again. You will be amazed at how quick it makes your pc with all that porn, old games and other guff you dont know is embedded on your hdd.

I'm using xp.

Done all that add/remove a couple of months back, hardly anything left there now.

The cd driver is bust so cant use any cd's what so ever but after searching around a bit i found this..

http://www.tune-up.com/download/

I took the 30 day freebie and on it they have a turbo boost which speeds up your pc, particulary game sites and would you believe it...I can watch sokker matches normally again :)

Still got the youtube and other site problems though.

PC came with 256 ram. no idea how it works though, does it fill up and the available ram reduces? If so how can I find out what I have left?

Last defrag I done went from 15% available space to 25% Dont know if it's connected but thought I'd mention it.

256 is very low. if you go to crucial.com you can enter your computers make and model and it will tell you how much ram your computer can handle and how many slots it has. it will also tell you which ram is compatable with your machine.
if you right click on my computer and select properties this will tell you exactly how much ram your computer has.
you can buy ram on ebay, thats what i done. it only cost me £8 for 512 ram. it was second hand but it works perfect.

yup at 256mb your in serious trouble there mate. Your nearly in the wind it up machine league ;)

For example cheap laptops are coming with 2 Gig ram which i still consider to be too low and will instanly up the beast to 4 gig.
2010-01-27 11:04:54
What's a gig? sure I've been to one of those at the Edinburgh playhouse :)

Just checked out that site diessel posted, I have 256 ram and one slot free. adding another 256 wont increase performance by much , if at all, but adding 512 will give me maximum performance. They want £42 but I'll follow diessel onto ebay and see how much cheaper I can get it.

Last question, if I go down this road, how easy is it to add ram? take the back off the tower and slot it in somewhere? Remember, complete computer doughball here :)

its pretty easy mate. i done it myself. if you look on youtube there are a few tutorials about it.
all you do is lift the two clips either side of the slot then push the ram in. you should here it click into place then you shut the clips.

Yep, cheers.

I've just found a decent guide which I've read through. seems simple enough.

I'll give it a go, while I'm at it, it looks that I might aswell buy 2 x 512mb. Hopefully see a big difference.

Thanks for the help Gents.

1 Gig is all Ive got. As long as you don't have hunners of things open at once, its fine enough.

Reekie at least you should be able to pick a new PC in the sales if you get any blue flashes. Stand well back when you switch on just in case now.

1 gig should be ok for an xp machine

you need a 64bit operating system to run more than 3 gig

256meg of ram is like trying to start a fire with a couple of stones
