Evaluation of the new match engine has been made over the last period and we found it clear that some tweaking was needed to the tactical battles to achieve the engine we want to provide for the most fun gameplay experience.
Tactical battles via attacking style has been changed. This means when choosing your attacking style that:
- Formations are LESS important in relation to attacking style
- Skills are MORE important in relation to attacking style
So instead of setting a formation to counter your opponent, it is now more important to counter them with players with skills that fit. E.g. have good headers in defence if your opponent plays long ball rather than a certain formation does the job perfectly.
Insights
So here is a sum up of what skills matter for each attacking style:
Shortpassing
Key skills for successful shortpassing
- Superb passing and technique needed for especially midfielders and forwards.
- Decent work rate, pace and positioning overall also helps.
Key skills for stopping shortpassing attacks:
- Postitioning and tackling are key to getting into position and breaking the tiki-taka passes.
- Secondarily marking and work rate also help to stop the attacks.
Long balls
Key skills for successful long balls
- Your attacking players need lots of heading and secondarily strength.
- Decent passing, crossing, technique, work rate, and positioning for your defensive players also helps to set up great long passes.
Key skills for stopping long balls
- Have strong, especially central defenders, who are superb at heading.
- Other defensive skills also matter but heading is clearly the most important one to cover for long balls.
Wing Attacks
Key skills for wing attacks
- Your wingers needs lots of pace and crossing. Especially the most offensive ones.
- There will be a fair amount of header chances, so make sure you have forward who are decent at this.
- Technique is also an important skill for your wingers, as well as work rate and strength can be useful
Key skills for stopping wing attacks
- Your wingers needs lots of pace and tackling. Especially the most defensive ones.
- Marking is also an important skill for your wingers, as well as positioning, work rate and a teaspoon of strength can be useful.
Through Balls
Key skills for successful through balls:
- Your attacking players need lots of pace.
- Decent passing, technique, crossing, work rate, and positioning also helps to set up the deadly through passes.
Key skills for stopping through balls:
- Have fast defensive players
- Other defensive skills, mainly positioning, also matter but pace is clearly the most important one to cover for through balls.
Direct/Counterattacks
Key skills for successful direct attacks
- Especially midfielders and forwards need pace and technique.
- Decent passing, work rate, and positioning overall also helps.
Key skills for stopping direct/counterattacks:
- Marking and work rate for your most defensive players are key to stopping counter attacks.
- Secondarily positioning, pace and tackling also helps to stop the attacks.
Formations – besides being toned down in importance in the attacking style boost – have been altered a bit. Here is the insights.
Shortpassing
Was a bit underpowered. Upped a bit and given midfielders a little more importance. Will normally be a good style to pick if you have an offensive formation and is the better team (and skills fit to short passing style!)
Long Balls
Was too overpowered. Changed so offensive players do not count to cover for long balls. You need strong headers in defence and solid numbers in back to defend against long balls now.
Wing Attacks
Was a bit underpowered. Effect upped a bit when playing with this style
Through Balls
Was a bit underpowered. Wingers give a little more now (nearly none before). But most important for this style is pace up front and the change to higher skills importance really make this style more playable under the right conditions.
Direct/Counterattacks
No change made to this.
We will not give exact numbers. This is due to we do not want it to be a game where you calculate in a spreadsheet what to do. The new changes should see the attacking styles and formations being based on normal football logic and working thereafter.
So now you need to choose a playing style and build a team over time that fits to it.
