I visit the city on Saturday for 5-6 hours. Whats your opinion about it, worth to see? What I have to see? Do you have there some nice special beers or liqueurs? Or special food? I always like to try...
Only been there twice and it's more than 300 km away, so I don't like it:P
The city doesn't have much special I suppose. It is very cosy, a bit like Aachen (not strange :)).
I'd prefer to go there in summer, by the way :).

nothing special??!!??
Its a very cosy, small city but with a lot to see. On saterday the shopping is great over there, and u defenitely should visit "het Vrijthof". its the most popular square, with a lot of bars and restaurants.
Then there are a lot of churches to visit, a very nice one is on "het onze lieve vrouwe plein" Near het vrijthof and the river: the Maas. At that church, there is a very nice sqaure with nice and cosy bars!
And i dont know if u like the coffeeshops, but if u want to visit them, this might be your last chance, since they are closing them or making them non-available for foreigners..
But i must say: i prefer the city in the summer, its much nicer and better then :)

Haha Maastricht. Where should I begin.
In the city are many people. Also a lot of people out Belgium and France. Half of the time they are there for shopping and visit the coffeeshops.
In Maastricht you have also 2 big squares with pub's. There's also a river ''Maas''.
The ''sokker'' club of Maastricht names MVV Maastricht who's playing in the second division of Nederland (Jupiler League). The stadium has a capacity of +- 10.000 people.

And from me to Maastricht is 15 minutes by train (I come from Sittard, it's a city who lays 20 km to the north of Maastricht.
Sorry for my bad English! :P

Sorry, let me clarify. I meant nothing special in terms of food or beers ;-). It is cosy and has a more southernly atmosphere than most Dutch cities.
for sure :) i love that,
but there is a lot of tourism also, not only beer and food ;)
Next to Amsterdam, Scheveningen and Zandvoort, Maastricht is one of biggest tourism cities in holland :)

Lots of tourism doesn't mean a lot of special things to see :P. But I guess we're a bit spoiled here, almost all Dutch cities (with historic centre, that is) are worth a visit.
Yeah, it's because it's on the Dutch and French border.
I know Maastricht, yes. And I like it, as I like many Dutch cities. As I said, special about it is the atmosphere for me, the rest is nice, but not special.
thanks so far for all your comments
funny that you mention Aachen. I will come from Düsseldorf with a stop in Aachen, have a look there, then go to Maastricht (all by train).
why in summer? More people outside?
I read the university is very international. 30% of them are germans. Maybe the city has then a german touch :)
how long are the shops open on Saturday? We have a public holiday in Germany. Maybe some people coming to NL then...
@kokkie: I will check your places. thx
concerning coffee shops... I dont have use for it...
I will go there with a girl, and she wants to see something :) so I identified some places to visit:
Bonnefantenmuseum (not sure if its interesting)
Helpoort
Lang Grachtje street
Entre Deux - a recently rebuilt shopping centre which has won several international awards
the Inner City - city centre and main shopping district
Fort Sint-Pieter
Bassin - an old and completely restored inner harbour with restaurants and cafés
Saint Servatius Basilica
what do you think about these?
and where could we start, coming from the train station?

That will be enough for 5-6 hours I guess, and probably there isn't much more to see in Maastricht :P Been their ones to visit a friend. Before I knew it I left the centre and entered some boring suburb. Small town so most people don't only visit Maastricht but also the surroundings (for example Valkenburg and Sint Pietersberg), as far as I know.
