Pitkästä aikaa kohtalainen kausi Staroille tämän pelin puolella.
Lauantaina junnuille 1. amatöörisarjassa mestaruus viimeisen kierroksen voitolla. Tänään seniorijoukkueen kohdalla viimeisen kierroksen voitolla noustiin pronssille Veikkausliigassa.
Kauden 36 päättyessä Starat saa lopulta iloita historiansa 3. veikkausliiga pokaalista.

The last day of FreeKick
It is with sad hearts that I and the Freekick staff have to admit that the Freekick saga is to an end. To be clear: the site is not coming up again.
We have endured hardship together with a resilient community over the years, but now the ten year journey has reached its end. The game and community will surely be missed. For us that have developed the game it’s like saying good bye to a partner or even the death of a close relative. My life will be empty to start with – both as developer and as a manager of my club Underdogs.
Life don’t get easier by putting blame, but we are fighting of a feeling of letting down our dedicated users that love playing the game. We would like to thank you all for making this journey so enjoyable and I am sure to meet some of you again in future endeavors or other unexpected situations. May the match engine be with you!
The immediate technical difficulties
The lack of resources in the Freekick project constantly put strain on people and aging hardware. The situation that we faced at the beginning of the season may seem like a freak coincidence, but was probably unavoidable in the long run. The database became corrupted which caused team and player data to be unusable or/and unreliable. The backup system didn’t work as planned, which would force the game to roll back longer than acceptable. Clearing up this situation would take weeks (if not more) and demand full attention from tech people where there is no budget for that kind of dedicated work.
The economic reality
If the Freekick game had been an economic success we wouldn’t be in this situation. The backup would be manually (or automatically) double checked and the hardware would have been updated long ago. And even if it had happened we would invest further to fix the errors. The reality is that the game, although successful in entertaining thousands, has never been commercially successful. It has been fueled by idealism (dream of the intelligent football game) and the enjoyment that we felt playing the game ourselves. By also engaging in other projects that were commercially successful that allowed us to pay for the expensive hobby and by investing our own time, we kept the game going. We weren’t rewarded with money, but as idealists we love the feeling of doing something you can be proud of.
Surely we could have done something different and brought in more funds from the Freekick game. We are sure that some of you were ready to pay more for the game and we are of course grateful for all that supported the game over the years. But the reality is that we would need to multiply the income (number of paying customers combined with price) by factor 15 (approx.) to give the project longevity. We couldn’t come up with anything that would in any way manage this. And the Freekick game takes a lot of resources to run without new features being added (servers, hosting, tech support, volunteer organization, bug fixes). In other words, hardware cost money, and so does salaries. Without money it’s impossible to run a huge (datawise) and complex site as Freekick.org.
That means that even if we came up with the funds to finance a rescue mission, we wouldn’t have the funds to run the game and prevent this to happen again. Many of you would also lose heart after losing weeks (or more) of progress, which would make the financial situation even worse. This is why it’s the economic reality that is behind the technical situation and not the other way around.
I have just paid for a subscription (or have a looong subscription)!
If you paid by paypal recently, you can ask them to withdraw the payment if you want. If you have a long subscription left then you also may feel that we should reimburse it. We will manually access tables in the database to try to verify any claims and see if we can help you out. We know that some had almost five years subscription in advance and that is actually a serious amount (€100+) and we totally understand if you want that back and we will prioritize any such claims. If you could find it in your heart to not ask for reimburse for smaller amounts we would be very grateful (considering the difficulty the situation has put us in). Any credits left will of course be on your account would we start a new game project in the future.
If you feel that you should be reimbursed, mail to info@freekick.org and tell use user name and club name, when you paid us, how much and a paypal account where we can reimburse you. It will take us time to collect data and try to help you out, so don’t expect quick response to your claim.
The journey of Freekick
I cannot help but be nostalgic and remember the last ten years with appreciation. We have worked our asses of and have entertained tens of thousands of people (several hundred thousand unique users have been registered in Freekick over the years). We have supplied some brilliant and some awkward solution to the common issues of this type of game. We have often chosen unconventional and complex solutions to seemingly simple challenges. We have been accused of many things, but we have never been boringly predictable in our development. The game may not have reached the numerical heights of some other games in this genre, but we have kept our unique vision and approach to the football game project.
We have done our best to listen to input from community without faltering from our path. Some decisions we made over the years caused moments of “darn – why didn’t we think about that”, but more times we have had satisfied smiles when seeing the beautiful dynamic we created. Yes, even when the community didn’t see it as beautiful :) We have had hundreds of hours of interesting discussions with the community. Often explaining, sometimes corrected when we made mistakes, always inspired and never closing our ears. I know that some have seen me personally as awkward to discuss with, hard to convince and some think I didn’t listen to you. I always did – we just choose our own path (right or wrong) after weighing all known aspects of an issue. I really appreciate all of you voicing your opinions. Thank you!
I also remember the bidding wars for key players, the last minute goals that ended in happy roars or disgusted screams. The tactical success and the dumbfounded face when I realized that I underestimated my opponent. The daily training updates and the tamagotchi feeling taking care of the players gave me. I always loved my youth squad and am proud that both youth and senior ended the career in Swedish premier division. Thanks for all opponents that fought me and made my life a little more enjoyable. I will miss playing the game of FreeKick.
The end of the road(?)
“No one died programming this game”. We are much alive (although worn out and sentimental). Although somewhat foreseeable considering what I have written about the economic situation above, today still feels like a shock. We don’t know what we will do in the future. Will we invest in the development of a new game in the future? Will we part ways and do things that are less idealistic and wild? We don’t have the answers about the future. We choose to enter it with memories of the good times and lessons about the obstacles in the past. The future is unknown.

Freekick closed - The last day of FreeKick. :(

No mää olen kyllä yksi, jota harmittaa.

Tervetuloa Sokkeriin turpakii! Oletko aiemmin pelannut tätä peliä?
