Final report qualification

The qualifying has ended since yesterday. We clearly missed the high goal of participating in the World Championships. However, we have achieved the minimum goal of maintaining 3rd place.

We had some very good games, such as the first leg against Belgium (when we won 2:0 without any discussion) or the last qualifying game against Dominican Republic. So we took revenge for the draw in the first match. Sometimes we lacked luck (you just have to force it). The biggest problem in the qualifiers was that we only had 3 midfielders who were U21 level. Then we suddenly had problems with the form of our defenders and that although we actually had a large selection of such players. Even worse was our striker. Actually, we only had U20 strikers. The 21-year-old strikers we used in the qualifiers were only fast, but they had no technique and no attack.

Since we are not going to the Quali, this already has consequences for the planning of the next 2 seasons. The current U20 generation will be declared a "lost Generation" and the U21 will put an emphasis on the current U19 players. However, until the end of the season we will still use some U20 players to reward the owners' efforts and from next season onwards, however, we will use more of today's U19. Scouting is coming up and let's try again in 2 seasons so we can finally go to the World Cup!

We need every one of you, we need every youth school and we need targeted optimal training of the Norwegian players!

News about the U21

From today on we will play more with the U19, as we will not have any competitive matches with the current U20 next season. However, this process will take time and from now on I will try to use as many U19 players as possible. The reason is simple: the current U19 players should get as much experience and coaching bonus as possible. The goal is to make today's U19s as strong as possible in 2 seasons.

But we are playing against Switzerland, who will be playing with the U20s because they will be at the World Cup. Therefore, I will still call up some U20 players here. We will do the same until the end of the season.

I have already scouted some players and the U19 squad looks promising. We are still missing some defenders and strikers for the U19s. Above all, it seems to me that we again have a big weakness in the strikers and will probably have to fall back on the strikers from the U18s (fortunately, I have two such strikers in my squad who are being trained). We will hardly have goalkeeping problems and MID problems with the U19s, but some midfielders have a big gap in some skills, but we have about one season to fill those gaps.

Hey dear people from Norway!

I'm running for election. We didn't reach the goals, but we didn't have a bad campaign overall. We were doing very well in the beginning until we got two silly defeats. But I am not at a loss as to why we failed and made lessons out of it. While we can learn from the lessons, what to implement will also be a difficult task. But I'm very happy to do that and I'm already trying to build up the new U19s, who will be U20s next season and will play a crucial role in the qualifying season.

In any case, the big NT benefits from the good U21 work and former U21 players are increasingly being brought up in the big NT.

Thank you for allowing me to continue coaching your country. I will certainly get back to you on this later. I saw that we first won 5-0 against Honduras (forfeit) and then lost 5-0 against Slovenia a week later.

News about U21 Norway

In the last 5 weeks there have been problems with the database first. As you know, I use Sokker Asistente and it had problems. Now these problems have been fixed and the scouting can go on. I know we haven't been very successful in the last 5 games and in between Slovakia has beaten us hands down, but we have also had other close defeats. The main reason is also that we play strictly with the U20s, because there's no point in us playing with the U21s because we don't have any more compulsory games for this season.

Of course, there are teething problems due to this change. But I am convinced that consistent implementation (using the U20s) can lead to success at some point. We have also played against U21 teams in friendly matches. The biggest challenge at the moment is actually the whole team:

Goalkeepers
there we are well prepared for the next 2 seasons. We will have strong goalkeepers and it has to stay that way.

Defenders
The width of DEF's is incredibly small. I only have 4 DEF's available who are just reaching U21 level. Another 4 players are being intensively scouted. But let me briefly show where the problems lie: The most important skills are of course Pace and DEF: One has 14 DEF, the other 13, then there are two players with 11 DEF. After that 10, 9, 8 and so on. On the Pace level, only 2 players have Pace above 10 and all the others below 10.

To defend reasonably in the U21, you need at least 4 players with 12 in Pace and 12 in DEF. Even better are 14 pace and 14 DEF. Then we can talk about the B-skills later.


MIDS
Even though our MID's draw high wages, it doesn't mean they are eligible. Many of the MID's have over 13 pace, but otherwise a big gap in passing or playmaking (I am talking about numbers between 3-6). For the U21s, however, we need players who achieve at least a 9 in pace, technique, passing and SA. Those would be the minimum requirements actually. So far only one player fulfils that!!! But the chances are good that two more players can meet this minimum requirement. But yes, with 3 such players it is already difficult to build something reasonable.

I have also discussed with the local managers and also advised how we can do better. I also understand that club targets are important. Unfortunately, however, many such MID's are not trained 100% or get too much of a workout. You have to decide whether it makes sense to sell a player if you can no longer train him properly. We'll stay tuned though!


Striker
Again our big weakness. While other nations already have U20 strikers who achieve at least a 10 in pace, technique and striker, we already have to fall back on the U19s. At the moment, none of our strikers has reached the skill total of 30. The best have a skill total between 27 and 29, so we are at a big disadvantage. But fortunately I have two trainees who are being trained 100% to make up for this shortfall.



As you can see, we are facing a future with many construction sites. But of course I will do my best. But we also have to lower our expectations. I hope that with the new training system, the Norwegian players can be trained more efficiently.

We are training the players for the upcoming qualification. Yesterday, we lost once again because we played against the expectations of an U21 team. At least it's encouraging that we only lost by a narrow margin again. But we are getting stronger and stronger week by week

The coach slamtam is one of the good coaches in the game. It is good to see him to improve. I'm glad to watch Norway U21 do the right thing.

Dear Norwegians

Last Friday we were able to celebrate the first success of this season. It turned out to be a clear 3:0 victory against Albania. This time we also played against a U20 (us too).

Significantly, this time a new tactic was introduced that better suits the player material. Since we have too weak forwards compared to the opposing defenders, I put an extra defender behind the two forwards (!) Yes, you read it right! A defender behind the two strikers! This way the special defender is supposed to relieve the two strikers and also win back some balls in front so that the attack is still in a flow. This defender fulfilled the high demands such as building up the game and passing, so that he could also cleverly distribute the balls further as a hanging tip.

We will use this new approach in the next game. Actually, I saved two tactics for the game against Albania and scheduled substitutes, but for some unknown reason that didn't work out.

Dear Norwegians

Already 2 wins in a row! This time we gave 6 goals to the opponent. That also had something to do with the fact that our opponents also started with the U20s, just like us, and secondly, their goalkeeper is still 18 years old. Even with our U19 strikers, we had a slight advantage. That's why we don't have to overrate the high victory.

Despite the high victory, it was shown to us mercilessly that we have a defensive weakness. But that also had a lot to do with the tactical facilities. First of all, there was the normal standard 5-3-2 tactic and this was highly problematic against Ecuador. Then we used the new tactic, which I will now call the Krogsæter tactic. It consists of having a DEF like Krogsæter placed behind the tips. Against Ecuador, too, the analysts could only report positive things about this unusual tactic: Krogsæter kept the backs of the two strikers free and this time he served the strikers with balls (unlike in the last game: then Krogsæter won many balls already in the opponent's half and triggered a quick attack forward).

Without overestimating the two victories in a row, we are slowly moving to an area where we can say: Slowly, the U21 coach has understood which tactics suit the current player material. The weaknesses and strengths are known and the goal is to gain more experience with these tactics and to fine-tune them where adjustments can still be made through observation.
