The final hours of the January transfer window...
The transfer window closes on Monday at 5pm and despite the financial downturn Premier League clubs have been spending freely.

Even a conservative estimate of Premier League expenditure so far is in excess of £130million — it could even reach £200million.

So many transfers are conditional on other transfers that the system can get blocked. With the clock ticking, it only takes one big move to trigger a plethora of smaller ones – Roque Santa Cruz going to Manchester City could trigger a flurry from Sam Allardyce.

Harry Redknapp is in the ridiculous position of having to make a January signing to replace a January signing. With Jermain Defoe possibly out for the rest of the season Redknapp will be desperately seeking a striker.

For some the deadline will come as a relief. The pursuit of Andrei Arshavin, which has gone on all January, has tested the patience of Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger.

Arsenal
Having spent most of the window negotiating a deal for Zenit St Petersburg’s Russian playmaker Andrei Arshavin, the next priority is sorting out a new contract for Theo Walcott.

Micah Richards, the Manchester City defender, is keen on joining the club but a move is only likely if Manchester City manage to lure Kolo Toure to Eastlands. The return of Eduardo and Tomas Rosicky will be like getting two top new players in.

Aston Villa
Martin O’Neill has done smart business by bringing in Emile Heskey from Wigan but is reluctant to move again if clubs demand a January premium. Paul Scharner, the Wigan defender, could be brought in with Martin Laursen out injured.

Blackburn
The future of Roque Santa Cruz has been the main issue at Ewood Park. If he leaves, Sam Allardyce may go for Pavel Pogrebnyak from Zenit St Petersburg, Darren Bent of Spurs or the prolific Austrian Marc Janko. El-Hadji Diouf has joined for £2 million, France defender Gael Givet has joined on loan and Egypt’s Ahmed Al-Mohammadi may also arrive on a temporary basis.

Bolton
Sporting Lisbon’s highly-rated Portugal holding midfielder Miguel Veloso could be on the verge of signing for a club-record £15million. If not, Sean Davis could replace Kevin Nolan. Marc Zoro, the Benfica defender, is another likely arrival and Gary Megson may resurrect a move for West Ham’s Calum Davenport. Birmingham are also after Davenport though.

Chelsea
Luiz Felipe Scolari wants a winger, preferably a left-footer, to bring balance and deliver imagination. Angel di Maria, Benfica’s 20-year old Argentina winger, is the preferred choice but he will be difficult to sign before the summer, when Chelsea are expected to restructure. Having sold Wayne Bridge and with Branislav Ivanovic possibly moving to Fiorentina, defensive cover is needed.

Everton
David Moyes knows his squad is desperately short of attacking depth, having had Victor Anichebe as his only fit striker for weeks. Darren Bent (on loan) and Asamoah Gyan (from Rennes) have been suggested as targets.

Fulham
Roy Hodgson needs to replace Jimmy Bullard and would love to do that with Fabian Delph, Leeds’ tremendously promising England Under-21 midfielder. Giles Barnes has been signed from Derby on loan and Joe Ledley, of Cardiff, has also been watched.

Hull
Phil Brown has done brisk business this month in an attempt to rejuvenate a season on the slide, with Jimmy Bullard the prize capture. He would like one more forward, having failed to sign Luis Boa Morte. Henri Camara of Wigan is a loan target. Steven Mouyokolo, the Boulogne central defender, is in talks but only for a summer move.

Liverpool
It was reported in the week that Liverpool would want either Aaron Lennon or Jermaine Jenas as part of a deal to sell Robbie Keane back to Spurs. Benitez certainly lacks a pacy right-winger but with issues about the club’s future ownership and Benitez’s influence over transfers, significant movement is doubtful.

Manchester City
Wayne Bridge (Chelsea), Craig Bellamy (West Ham) and Nigel de Jong (Hamburg) have arrived for nearly £40million but further recruitment is expected: goalkeeper Shay Given should switch from Newcastle and City will push to try and get long-standing target Roque Santa Cruz from Blackburn. The club are also monitoring the availability of Sporting Lisbon’s Portugal midfielder Miguel Veloso.

Manchester United
The club has signed the promising Serb pair of Zoran Tosic, 21, and Adem Ljajic, 17, with the latter staying at Partizan Belgrade until the end of the season. United will monitor the availability of Wigan’s Luis Antonio Valencia this weekend.

Middlesbrough
Marlon King has come in on loan from Wigan with Mido moving the opposite way. Wigan beat Boro to the signing of Ben Watson and Gareth Southgate still wants midfield cover.

Newcastle
Newcastle have had a frustrating time with only Peter Lovenkrands having arrived on a free and Kevin Nolan coming from Bolton. Charlton midfielder Josh Wright, 19, and Albin Ebondo, the Nantes right-back, are wanted while Marco Donadel, the Fiorentina midfielder, is a more ambitious target. Goalkeeping cover will be needed after Shay Given moves to Manchester City.

Portsmouth
Tony Adams will try to get three more players to Fratton Park by Monday night. Javier Saviola and Emerson were ambitious targets; Marlon Harewood (Aston Villa) and Amdy Faye (Stoke) are more realistic and Giovani dos Santos also looks set to join from Tottenham.

Stoke
Tony Pulis has already made two major signings in James Beattie (Sheffield United) and Matthew Etherington (West Ham) but may go into the market again to add depth to the squad, with Wigan’s Henri Camara a possible loan signing.

Sunderland
The club’s best signing of the window was getting striker Kenwyne Jones to sign a new four-and-a-half-year contract. Ricky Sbragia is reportedly chasing five signings, with Christophe Berra, the Hearts defender, among them.

Tottenham
Harry Redknapp has been busy with Jermain Defoe, Wilson Palacios, Pascal Chimbonda and Carlo Cudicini all arriving. There is more business to come: Stephen Appiah has been on trial and is available for free, Marco Materazzi of Inter would tighten the defence, and Redknapp definitely wants another striker now Defoe is injured. With Fred, of Lyon, wanting big wages, Spurs could try and re-sign Robbie Keane from Liverpool.

West Brom
Strikers Jay Simpson (Arsenal) and Marc-Antoine Fortune (Nancy) have come in on loan but West Brom were really after PSG’s Youssuf Mulumbu, who is out of contract at the end of the season but the deal appears to have collapsed.

West Ham
The signing of Savio Nsereko from Brescia is being followed by that of Radoslav Kovac, Spartak Moscow’s Czech international centre-back. Inter are unlikely let Italy Under-21 striker Mario Balotelli move to Upton Park on loan, though.

Wigan
Steve Bruce has lost two of his three best players, Wilson Palacios and Emile Heskey. Hugo Rodallega, Ben Watson, Mido and Charles N’Zogbia have all arrived.
