Rafa Benitez Won't Be Handed Total Command Of Liverpool Transfers - Report
The Spaniard will still have to convince the club's American owners before completing new signings...
According to a report in the British broadsheet The Independent, Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez is close to agreeing a new contract after conceding defeat in his quest to control the club's transfer policy.
Apparently, the 48-year-old had asked to be allowed to decide for himself which players to sign and sell, and for how much, but it seems that club owners George Gillett and Tom Hicks were unwilling to include a clause in his new deal.
The American duo, it is believed, have had a hands-on approach to date with regard to Liverpool transfers, even deeming that £18 million was too much to spend on Aston Villa midfielder Gareth Barry last summer.
Whether Benitez will accept the decision and sign a new deal remains to be seen, as he was recently quoted as stating, "If you have £20m you can sign four players at £5m, one for £20m or one of £15m and another of £5m.
"Who will know how the money should be spent? One person, the manager, because he knows who he wants for his squad. Who will know the value of the player? The manager."
