Rafa Benitez refused to call time on the title race after the 2-0 defeat to Middlesbrough - but admitted the Premier League was now Manchester United's to lose.
The Reds slumped to only their second league defeat of the season after Tuncay added to a Xabi Alonso own goal.
A victory for Chelsea over Wigan means Liverpool now sit third in the Premier League, seven points behind Alex Ferguson's front runners.
Benitez said: "Before the game it was difficult and after it is more difficult. We will see against Sunderland and try to improve but it depends on United now.
"If you want to stay at the top of the table you have to score.
"I will not say too much because for me it's clear that in the first 20 minutes we created five chances and you have to take chances if you want to win.
"We had some problems and injures - some players were tired but we had chances. We were in control for the first 30 minutes. Middlesbrough did well in the second half."
Liverpool's day got worse on 77 minutes when the returning Steven Gerrard had to be withdrawn after picking up a knock.
However, Benitez revealed afterwards that the injury was unlikely to keep him out of Tuesday's visit of Sunderland.
"He had cramps. I don't think it will be serious," said the boss.

LFC. begon stevig aan de match. Dirk & Nabil hadden ieder een enorme doelkans, maar hun linkerpoot is niet vd beste. Dirk miste eveneens een intikker. Altijd hetzelfde voorin, mega slechte afwerking.
Alonso met de ongoal (raakt de bal met z'n Linkerzij). Kon vermeden worden, was vrij lage bal en Skrtel kopte er niet tegen. Naar het einde toe begon boro ons te ownen, kregen de ene kans na de andere.
Arbeloa kamt met een hamstringblessure (typisch bij onze club qua blessure) en dus besloot Rafa om Skrtel als RB te gebruiken. Hij speelde in heel zijn carriere nooit eerder als rechtsback, dus je kan het je al voorstellen. De directe vervanger v Arbeloa is normaal Degen, maar die speelde nog geen enkele minuut sinds zijn zomertransfer. Zit misschien nog steeds met blessures te kampen, geen idee, totale miskoop eigenlijk, soit. Jamie Car. is anders ook een optie als RB.
Maar nope, Rafa koos opnieuw wat te schuiven. Skrtel van linker centrale verdediger op rechtsbuiten, Cara op zijn vaste plek en de oude en tevens trage Hyppia als linker centrale verdediger. Opnieuw geen Agger te bespeuren, niet eens op de bank :s
En dan starten met Babel & El Zhar. Niet meteen een linkermid vervanger voor Albert Reira. Voor Torres ook niet meteen een vervanger, buiten het Nederlands duo (Kuyt & Babel) die vervormde spitsen zijn tot wingers.
De titel is van u Man U en dat wist ik al langer. Chelsea staat nu 2des, evenveel punten als LFC. maar met een beter doelsaldo. En Aston moet nog 2 matchen inhalen en kan virtueel ook over die 2 springen (chels & lfc). Zal nog spannend worden.
Wigan, wat een taaie tegenstander en meermaals de bal vd lijn kunnen halen, maar Chels kon er in extremis toch van winnen, chapeau.
Arsenal nu traditiegewijs, ook al de zoveelste draw. Verdiende zeker van Fulham te winnen.

Andriy Voronin hit his fourth goal in four games on Saturday as Hertha Berlin reclaimed top spot in the German Bundesliga after a 2-1 win over bottom club Borussia Moenchengladbach.
The Ukraine international - who is on a year-long loan from the Reds - gave Hertha the lead with an excellent finish.

Steven Gerrard looks set to face Sunderland on Tuesday despite hobbling out of the 2-0 defeat to Middlesbrough.
The skipper suffered cramp during the closing stages at the Riverside but trained alongside his teammates this morning.
However, Rafa Benitez will again be without Fernando Torres, Alvaro Arbeloa and Daniel Agger when Ricky Sbragia's side visit Anfield.
The gaffer told Liverpoolfc.tv: "Stevie was okay and will hopefully be available tomorrow.
"Torres is not ready yet. We have to wait to see how he progresses but he won't be in the squad.
"Arbeloa has a problem with his hamstring. He's had the problem before. It could be another week."
