Well, it seems like I'm the only one who thinks that today's tactic was not good.
No wonder we didn't score any goals.... Our tactic was basically 5-3-2. I mean come on, our defenders are quite good, we dont need to put a five man wall against every strong opponent.
And two center midfielders and one winger? That's basically putting all our hopes to the one winger and Liitmaa is not the best winger in the world (nor is Kalmre). The midfielders had basically no options of passing, no wonder they passed the ball back to the defenders. Netherlands defense marked our strikers well and they were constantly in offside. So the CM-s couldn've passed to them. So they tried to pass to Liitmaa, which didn't succeed every time, because Liitmaa had a defender near him. And then in came Kalmre. Kalmre can't beat a defender on 1-1. He's the type of a Midfielder that needs lots of space.
Well, playing with 5 defenders is needless in my opinion. And playing with two midfielders at this level is kinda dumb. Midfield is the key to a succesful game. Well, maybe the reason I think this way, is because I'm a MID trainer myself... But when I started watching today's game and saw our tactic, I was almost certain that we won't score any goals.

You wouldn't say like that if Mulders was a high winger. He is better than Puyol and look what he was doing...still we had more 100% situations in 90min. The idea was not to loose a goal and scored one.

Still, Liitmaa got few throw ins[I was counting also on one or two corners...] and Kalmre made two good passes.

I don't think the marking was so good. The offside trap was great though...and yes, maybe Liitmaa shouldn't have played, maybe with one more mid it would be better. Who knows...

Oh come on. Are you really defending yourself and saying that today we deserved something else then losing?
Our midfield was basically nothing today, wether you admit it to yourself or not. And trying to keep our goal clean and hope to score one goal in WC knock-out stages is very risky. What are the odds, that a team as strons as Netherlands can't score a single goal? Well, you're tactic guaranteed, that if they score, we won't be able to score back. It seemed that you were hoping on penalties or smth.
But this is only my oppion. I just think that Netherlands deserved the win today.

Yes. Look how many really good opportunities both teams had today in 90min. Nederland had only long shots as far as I remember.
Yes, mids were bad. But...why? When the ball was on left side, Sai was free on the right. When the ball was on right side, Maripuu was free on left. They just weren't getting passes and making counterattacks because of thos throw in kicks from defs.

Have they scored or had a really good opportunity in 90min? :)

Oh come on, not at all. Miil got few situations :).
Thanks for the comment anyway, I like to talk about the tactic. I can always learn something that might be used in next games :)

And what would've been the point in Sai and Maripuu passing to each other?

Hm...yes, I thought that when one mid is free then he will get the pass and will have some place to run and make a decision who to pass.
Nederland was playing always same - when ball is on right, all mids go there[not wingers], etc. So the other side was always free.

So basically if the free MID would've gotten the ball he was supposed to pass it to the Attackers? And what would the attackers do against the defenders? I just think that our offensive side pretty much sucked. Two midfielders just isn't enough at WC level of sokker.
But hey, that's only my point of view.
But hey, that's only my point of view.
Hm...so how do you think, what should mids do? Score? :p
The mid had Liitmaa/Kalmre to pass then, or striker. And few passes to Miil ended nicely. Believe me - if there was Naarits it would've looked completely other.
You have the right for own opinion. :)

I agree with Oliver regarding the tactic - I think it wasn't very good.
Midfield was empty. When Netherland had the ball then Sai was also not very near Netherland mids and he couldn't get everywhere. It was just a good luck that Netherland midfielders didn't make nice pass throughs, because they were often free to do that.
5 defenders is a waste.
I really liked Netherlands defense, 4 defenders and when ball was on one side they moved to that side aswell. This is how you cover the field with 4 defenders.
The throw in's were bad, Sai was too near to defs and always passed back.
Maripuu sucked, wasn't fast and didn't too much. I'd say Kalmre was a disaster. Too young, too low technique and with no space there is no meaning having that high passsing skill.
Also, our strikers again - didn't use the chances (as in IRL Estonian strikers) :)
Anyway, I think Borkos007 you are trying different tactics too much, find the 3-4 best ones and play with those, change those according to the next opponent and I think things get better.

Midfielders should have the option to pass the ball between themselves. From one wing to the other. Trying to press the ball through from one spot throughout the game isn't very smart in my oppinion.
Well, I'll throw you an example. Let's imagine that you would've played 4-3-1-2. Well, basically move one defender to the midfield. The midfielders would've had more options to pass and we would've had some chances of gettin through from the other wing also.
Just watch Sillu's tactic agains Netherlands last WC. There were more midfielders and it worked pretty well. I just dont think that two midfielders are enough, no matter what you say.

Hmm, MID-s didn't pass much. If I remember correctly then couple of long passes came from defenders!!
Netherland midfielders didn't make nice pass throughs, because they were often free to do that.
They did but all were anticipated by the defs...thanks to defensive tactic...
5 defenders is a waste.
Watch game against Spain and imagine Maks was even near the penalty area.
This is how you cover the field with 4 defenders.
If I had a winger like Mulders, you wouldn't say that. Liitmaa was unstoppable on the wing but his passes were bad.
The throw in's were bad, Sai was too near to defs and always passed back.
It doesn't depend on me where is he passing too :(
Maripuu sucked, wasn't fast and didn't too much.
I also noticed that! The funniest thing is that he is really fast and has good form. :))
Maybe you're right.
Anyway I must start preparation for u21. The strikers will propably be Kuskov - Miil. Mids aren't bad, though Oidermann is without form. Defs are high class.

In the tactic Sai and Maripuu were placed on both sides of the field, because I agree with you.
But as jgrmstr said, they just weren't passing, just running through to defs, or mids.
Well, I'll throw you an example. Let's imagine that you would've played 4-3-1-2. Well, basically move one defender to the midfield.
I played similary against Spain and the highest mid wasn't playing that good.

basically you deny every kind of critcism over you? and you say your tactics have been ideal every game?
just bad luck, huh?
no, i don't mean to offend you. you did great job getting us through the tough group and also did well in qualifiers(except mexico ofc)but just you are defending yourselg all the time you have been coach. it's little annoying by the time.
anyway, hope our U21 will do better. good luck and don't let us distract you with your job

Anyway look at the game.
'10 Miil shots.[1 on 1]
'20 Miil shots.[1 on 1?]
'28 Van Den Haar shots[long one]
'60 Miil shots.[ 1 on 1?]
'88 Van den Haar shots
So in 90 we were better side in offense. Thay had the play, we had the opportunities!
But due to offside trap the defs were tired so Eesti lost 2 goals. One from wing pass - despite being blocked. Same with second. If Liitmaa made 1-2 passes then it would be a win of Eesti in my opinion.
