Captain Jack Sparrow is a main character in the film Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003), played by Johnny Depp. Depp claimed Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards was an inspiration for his performance (though Errol Flynn was clearly also an influence), which was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actor.
Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.
Image:Hottest.jpgCaptain Jack Sparrow is an English pirate who used to command the legendary ship Black Pearl. About ten years prior to the start of the movie, while searching for a legendary cache of Aztec gold his crew mutinied and marooned him on an island with a pistol containing a single shot (in order to kill himself instead of letting starvation kill him). However, he escaped, and went looking for revenge against the leader of the mutiny: First Mate (now Captain) Barbossa. He kept the pistol and single shot for the purpose of shooting Barbossa with it.
When Sparrow meets Will Turner, he immediately sees him as a way to get back his Black Pearl. (Will is of use to the crew because he can reverse the curse put on them many years before.) Sparrow takes Turner to Tortuga and to the Isla de Muerta, although Turner is totally against piracy, to track down the Black Pearl, and rescue Will's friend/love interest Miss Elizabeth Swann, who was mistakenly kidnapped when the pirates raided Port Royal. (They thought she was the one who could reverse the curse.)
One of his characteristic attributes is a slightly drunken walk (more of a stagger, accompanied by very random flailing hand gestures) which makes him look unfocused—that may partially be a ploy to put people off their guard but is falsely attributed to the heat stroke he was rumored to have suffered when marooned. However, he instead spent his short time marooned cavorting with rum runners, who helped him from the island, and thus, was unlikely to have suffered anything worse than a severe hangover. His perpetual drunkenness could also lead to his tendency to slur his speech.
Another characteristic of his is a quite atypical (for a pirate) altruistic nature, as he often puts himself in harm's way to save other people, notably Elizabeth Swann. It can be assumed that Jack's more kind nature is part of the reason why his crew mutinied, due to the fact when Jack suggests a nonviolent way to find a piece of the Aztec gold on the Interceptor, Barbossa claims, "Jack, that's exactly the attitude that lost you the Pearl. People are easier to search when they're dead."
At the end of the first film, Jack is once again the Captain of the Black Pearl.
Jack Sparrow is considered to be a ladies' man, and in this role, Sparrow appears as Terri Clark's fantasy lover in her country music video Girls Lie Too. Sparrow is not played by Johnny Depp in the video.
A sequel, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, is scheduled for release on July 7, 2006. The third, as yet untitled film will be released in July 2007.
