As a very new player, I'd like to tell you guys about my initial impression of the game, and hope to help the older players understand why there is a problem retaining new players.

I've been playing online football manager games for a long time now, over 5 years, and started with Hattrick. I quit HT 5 years ago, yet when I started playing SK I immediately noticed that it was the same in these ways:

1) Training only for particular positions
2) Training only if you play a match
3) Only one type of training each week

All this is good for HT, because it's simple and it's basic, but most people move on from HT because the system is counter-intuitive. It doesn't make sense. But to go back to the point of HT, HT is popular because it's simple and easy to learn.

SK takes the HT model and adds a graphical viewer, a coaching staff, and a junior school (correct me if I'm wrong, because it's been many years since HT for me). This is all well and good, but the problem is that you're taking something built to be simple, and making it complex. This doesn't always translate well.

SK, like most of these games, doesn't have a good system of getting new players into the game. I'll try to add a post later, or tomorrow, about my experience starting with SK. So we can divide the problem into two parts:

1) Getting new players in
2) Keeping players

For 1, talking about the game on forums is the method that works best to get in lots of casual starters. Telling people you know about it, and getting them to try, works well for getting people who will actually give it a good try.

Regarding 2, it's necessary to reach out and contact new players. No point waiting for them to post in the forum, since Singaporeans never like to show that they don't know something ;) Find out which teams are new, send them a message to welcome them and point them to the forums, and give them some immediate tips, such as:

1. DON'T SPEND ANY MONEY ON COACHES YET!
2. DON'T SPEND ANY MONEY ON THE STADIUM YET!
3. DON'T SPEND ANY MONEY ON PLAYERS YET!

and of course the golden rule:

DON'T SPEND ANY MONEY YET!

Then show the new player where to:

1. Determine what kind of coach(es) he need(s), and how much to pay.
2. Choose a training type to start off with. This relates to 3.
3. Determine what kind of players he has, and where he needs to strengthen the team.
4. Find out what is a good price for a player.
5. Work on tactics.

Do this, and we'll keep more players. Our forum is pretty active, so if we can get them involved we will increase the population here.

O. M. G. Is that the guy who got lucky with a junior, and got a few million for it? The money must've gotten to the brain!!! Joking.

Back to the topic, for a NEW player, you sure seem experienced. If you don't mind, you could help the new users too? I'm lazy to find where the new users are located.. What you say does make sense though. And Singaporean do not like to show that they DO not know something.

Wow! That was me breaking all those rules earlier in the game!! :)

I totally agree with Rifte! So shall we have a weekly gathering for newbies? I dun mind giving some of my time... I think it'd be fun. And drinks can be on me! :)

PS. The drinks part is joking! :P

We need to have a better way to know who are the new teams coming in... I'm too lazy to search for them... :(

We two old people here. Difficult to walk around find people.

Valgan you are completely wrong.

I got lucky with TWO juniors! :D

I'm only approaching the game properly because since I've been playing these games for quite a while, there are always some things you can and should do to get your team started well. That said, I made a big mistake by not paying attention to the coach fees, and my team was heavily in debt when the lucky breaks came.

With work and everything, it's hard for me to put more time into this game, but I'll do what I can. Ideally, everyone can see if they have new teams coming into their league, and try to contact them.

klvn, you started early, and someone has to make the mistakes first :) it's good to have gatherings, although not everyone is free, so getting new guys to start in the forum is a great first step.

Yeah, I agree... But it's a nice thought though...

Everyone wear a Sokker jersey, sit in a pub sip alcoholic drinks, non-alcohol for the 2 kids, of course... then watch our matches played out "live" on the pub's big screen!

Hmmm.... It might just happen one day! I'm dreaming again... :)

But seriously, if anyone need me to give personal coaching, i am game! :)

Nice idea! It would be really great, let's hope it comes to pass one day.

Bad habits : Drinking too much booze, after which, abuses the players by whacking them.

O.O
So now we'll need to spot for newcomers and spam them SK Mail!!!

Interesting post there. I didn't play HT before, so you can say SK is my first online soccer manager game.

I agree with this. Most would just give up when they see that things are not going their way. They do not have much patience. For example, when you first start in.. say league II, you'll get owned by those who started much earlier in league II. Imagine every match you're losing 9-0, 10-0 or maybe 12-1, you'll just give up the game. It is hard to solve this. The only way is to place those newcomers in league III and dun let them promote until they're ready. My worry is that, by the time they are ready, they would have already quit :(

Yeah, I remember my 1st days here... It was so lonely... The forums are empty... I dun know what to do... There's noone to teach me...

But still, it was so exciting to explore the unknown! Learning by trial and error! Reading the rules! Etc.. Etc..

And then, Valgan came along! Next was Slaynax... then Cakama... and Spankster... and Valric etc... and finally now we got the latest newbies iqbar... rifte... :)

Give it a few more months, iqbar and rifte will be mentors! :)
