Yeah, I remember my 1st days here... It was so lonely... The forums are empty... I dun know what to do... There's noone to teach me...

But still, it was so exciting to explore the unknown! Learning by trial and error! Reading the rules! Etc.. Etc..

And then, Valgan came along! Next was Slaynax... then Cakama... and Spankster... and Valric etc... and finally now we got the latest newbies iqbar... rifte... :)

Ok time for a recounting of how I felt about the game when I started. I hope you guys don't get bored of reading all this, but it's always good to know what your initial impressions were, like when you meet a beautiful woman for the first time ;)

I was looking for new and different games to play, because previously I had been playing a particular manager game for 4+ years, but it was dying because of developer arrogance (the 'I know better than you stupid users' attitude).

It was a text based game, and while looking at newer games I found that some of them had graphical match viewers, and that was an interesting new development. I like it, not just because it's eye candy, but because it helps immerse you into the matches, and therefore your team, and the game.

So SK was one of those I signed up to, and started playing.

First impression: HT! Man I quit HT so long ago, and for a good reason, and now this game is the same? Hmm... Ok can't just write it off, give it a try.

First action: Look at the team, and the skills of the players. Training works like HT, so you need to get trainees in a particular position. I found a good manager program in Sokker Organiser, but I don't like the formulas used to calculate positions (a very basic formula of skill*weightage isn't good enough for me, I need to have at least (current_skill - base_skill_level_necessary)*weight to give a more accurate representation of the player's effectiveness in a particular position), so I still determine the players I will use based on a spreadsheet, and my own judgement. Otherwise, SO is good for keeping track of training and the junior school.

Before I decided on my training position, it was necessary to understand what the skills did. Once that became clear, it was possible to know what kind of trainees to pick up, because then you know which skills they need, and how much they need to have.

I then picked up a few cheap young trainees, and made a few mistakes of course, but overall there's already a profit on the trainees I've bought (you need to take into account their wage when calculating whether you have made a profit). It's important to start training with new trainees once you know how to pick them, as this is your main source of income. If you can't make money, you can't run your team.

When starting to buy players, or players of a level you've not tried before, first place an early bid on a player, and try to see how much the amount goes up to. Learn what makes a player expensive. Is it age? Certain skills? Only when you know how much the market tends to pay, do you buy a player. (of course, if you're getting him for $1, feel free to get him)

Seeing that my team was weak in a certain area, I then bought one senior player to strengthen the side. Again, it's very important to know which skills do what, and thus which skills are good for which position, otherwise it's very easy to waste money on a player that's not as good as you thought.

Next was the tactics. I checked it out, and found that some people had some 'sure win' tactics, but they didn't seem too realistic to me. Also, if someone posts a tactic from a long time ago, and claim that it's unbeatable, you can be sure that it's been fixed already :)

So I started making my team's tactics, based on the areas in a match in which you see the most action. I still find the tactics maker quite fiddly to use, but it does allow you to control the movement of the team, which is good. Figure out which tactic allows your team to perform best, and use it, but also make sure you know which tactics your opponent uses, and try to find a way that suits your team and counters his team. I know this part is very 'Art of War', but the fact is that knowing how to balance the two aspects is the key to victory.

Since matches was the focus, I considered expanding the stadium, because again this is a source of income for your team. However, seeing that it was insanely expensive (for a new guy), the idea was postponed until more funds were available. If you're new, never expand the stadium.

Now, I always like grooming my own players from youth, so next was the junior school. Some research showed that you could get up to 6 new juniors each week, and that it was a waste to keep those with low skill levels (<average), so the junior school got set up, and you guys know how well that worked out :D

After all that, the following had been sorted out: the team, the training, the supply of youth, and the tactics. The stadium expansion could wait until later. Of the things that were done, this is what you get out of it:
Team: A stronger team gives you more supporters, and so you'll do better financially.
Training: More money, and also necessary to strengthen the team.
Juniors: Team growth, and again more money.
Tactics: A good tactic can help you beat a stronger team, and this leads to success and more money.

Now you'll see a common thread running through each item, and that is $$$. With money, you can really make your team grow. However, beware of spending beyond your means!

Even with my more cautious approach to spending, I still made a very big error: spending too much on coach fees and wages.

Coaches came to my attention when I was checking out on the training process. Most games don't have crazily expensive coaches, so I was caught unawares when I started to try to recruit new coaches. After a while, finding that my balance had dropped to negative, it was time to stop and just make do with what I had.

That wasn't the end, though. My finances were terrible, and I found that it was the coach wages that were killing me. I'd made the mistake of looking at their skill levels and not at their wages.

I got a lucky break, and managed to get out of that big big hole that I'd dug for myself, but for anyone else this is what I would advise:

Approach assistant and junior trainers the way you would approach buying a player. Check what's on the market, and how much the wages are for the skill levels you are looking at. Don't waste money on a trainer with a high wage for his position. If you pay $150k more for a trainer that costs you $10k less per week, you still balance out after one season, and starting the next season you will have more money that could have been frittered away on coach fees.

For the head coach, figure out which skills you think are important, and then try to get one with high skills in those areas and low in the others, so that you don't waste money. SK head trainers give random training in other skills, based on how high their skills are in the areas that you are not training. However, those higher skills can and will make his weekly wage much higher than you can afford, so stick to a cheap one that does the job first. You can get one with more frills later.

Lol. You are going the right way.

This game is loads better than HT. Although I've played HT for about 4 rl years, and still playing. I find that the game doesn't give a chance for a novice player to catch up with the rest. The training is slower than SK, Novice players need to take time to excel in the game, most importantly. The GOALS are stated in TEXTS, not VISUAL PROOF. HT imho, is more of a "battle of the players" game. Team with superior players win. Sokker is more tactical and interesting, with its graphic match viewer.

I think in the near future, you should do very well in this game and I hope to see you becoming a top player representing the nation and helping us build the NT.
