Very nice season ostulc...thnx for that...as i can see 2 losses from Venezuela cost us the dream...we will try again and again and again and 1 day dream will be reality...
Thank you mates! I hope we will manage to reach the World Cup once :) It would be nice to get amongst those 32 very best teams here...
Dear friends,
the season is almost over (at least if we consider that the last match was the last one of our golden generation) I don't want to write any kind of election speech - I hope you know me quite well :) I want to give you my opinion of the past season as well as discuss it with you... I hope I won't bore you with such a lenghty text ;)
Firstly I would like to thank to everybody who has helped the national team significantly. Owners of our players have done a great job and I hope they will continue in the same way. I have to thank to Mysi as well - even though he has a lot of work with Finnish U21 national team, he still help our team a lot both by training Tozun Christofi and by consulting some things with me as well. But the most important for Cyprus are "regular" users - without you there won't any Pounas, Nabi or others ;)
Enough talking, let's focus on the matter... As you know this season was the one of qualification group for the world cup.
Let's look at our individual opponents:
1. Hrvatska U21 1:2, 0:1
That's the team I've expected to be a winner... And they haven't disappointed me at all. Unfortunately we've experienced their strength as well. We've lost both matches we played against them. But I think it was quite a good effort from us as we lost both of them really tightly - 2:1 and 0:1. But still we were totally out of points.
2. Chile U21 1:1, 3:2
I think we could be some kind of nightmare. Chile as one of the strongest teams (at least on paper) that is placed currently on the 14th position was even defeated by us :) The first pretty nice match has ended up in a draw we may have been pretty angry for. But the revenge was completely another case and Sokker has shown us its better side - we defeated them 3:2 when we shot three times ;)
3. Venezuela U21 1:5, 1:5
That's completely different story and we can call them like a nightmare of us. We have lost both matches equally 5:1. Especially the second match was quite sad - I am still thinking what should I have done else to take points. I don't think they are so strong as they seemed in those matches :(
5. India U21 3:0, 2:0
India isn't strong team and furthermore their manager is quite a weak one. I thought we were going to take better results 3:0 and 2:0 wins but... We won both matches and that's great :)
6. Saudi Arabia U21 3:0, 1:1
Well ;) Completely weak team... But as usually pretty easy to underestimate and after all pretty difficult to play. In the first match we played with our strongest team and clearly won. In the second match I've given a chance to our futures - and there was a problem (especially strikerwise) We may have been quite happy with the draw as our player played really weak game :(
Now let's take a look at the friendlies:
Czech Republic U21 3:1
Well, okay. This match (even though it was just a friendly) was probably the most important match for me. You know, it's playing against local team and well known manager. Wal-Mart has made it quite easy for us as he failed in making the proper tactics and his tactics was really innocent. We've played a great match and he can be just happy that he lost only 3:1 ;)
Senegal U21 4:0
That was a match against the weaker opponent so it was time to give some time to our youngsters. There is not much that can be said about this match - maybe just that it was a pretty clear win :)
Bosnia and Herzegovina U20/U21 2:1
Once again I have given a chance to some of our reserves. There was even a debut of our young promising keeper Yasematis Nekipzade who has almost managed to keep clean sheet. After all we have slightly outplayed our opponent and have won 2:1 :)
Canada U21 3:1
This match wasn't that good. Especially as I hadn't enough time for the preparation to be able to make it more equal (as deathbymail has wrote me they will be playing U20) I was on holidays and even when I was setting the lineup and tactics I forgot to press the magical Save button. It has clearly helped us as we were clearly better team on the field.
As for the next season... As well as in past seasons I would like to do as much as possible both for Cypriot U21 team as well as for Cyprus itself. The most important for me is to make you happy and proud - then I could be happy as well :) The next season will be pretty difficult for us - currently we are attacking top 50 teams but after all those stars leaves for the senior NT? But if we want to try to keep up with the top teams we shouldn't be scared to face them - even at cost of some unsuccess. But I think that only this is the way to get better :) Next match we are playing against pretty strong Estonian selection. It will be some kind of challenge for our upcoming generation as they are still pretty strong even though they will be playing with younger players.
I would be glad to hear your comments and ideas :)
Thank you for a lot of your time ;)

Thanks for all the work you put up for Cyprus. We really appreciate it.
We have achieved great results but also some big disappointments. Maybe by achieving these great results and having in mind that we have a good generation in hand, we had higher expectations. Maybe some games were not that well prepared or some we underestimated our opponents. But well, we all learn from our mistakes.
But by having some more regular users now, we can expect that good generations will be the norm rather than the exception and we will be able to compete soon enough with the big boys.
All the best!

Thank you for your comment! :) I have just one more question for you - could you please specify more exactly those matches you were disappointed by? I think I know some of them but I may be looking on it just from one side and you can give me a different view. For me it's really important to have such a feedback :)
For me the really biggest disappointment were matches with Venezuela. I thought we have great chance, I've spent quite a lot of time preparing for the match and I really trusted in the tactics I have done. But when I saw the matches? It's better not to say that ;)
But that doesn't mean that was the only point I was really disappointed by. I was quite unhappy with the second match with Chile, both matches with India. Then I should mention the matches with Saudi Arabia where I should have clearly done way better.

Venezuela's matches costs as the qualification i think;/ with india we could win with biggest score but we get the points...with Hrvtska we show that we can win them next time...Good luck ostulc my vote is for you...
Thank you mate :)
Yes, the matches with Venezuela really costed us the World Cup :( If I imagine that we would have won once and drawn the second match, we would be on the second place now... That was really a biggest loss for me and even bigger for the whole NT :(
@demetris: I have already put my candidacy again :)
