This time we'll play without wingers, I expect Costa Rica plays with 4 or 5 defenders.
I'm quite unsure about the positons of our strikers, Costa Rica plays mainly with two defensive tactics, an offensive and a defensive one.
Last week they used the defensive one, the weeks before the offensive. That made some difficulty for me to place our strikers, I hope they're position is ok ...
That's my biggest concern, in the defense we'll play with two Def-Mids (Colbert and Brunton), therefore I expect our defense to be more solid than last week.

good luck. i think that they will play defensive:) with 4 defs.
Nope, again a weak performance! :-(
I don't like it what I saw!
Reidy was again great, good to know we have a very strong keeper!
Docherty was ok, Hanrahan also, but Kukurenka wasn't up to his talk! Even though his secondary skills aren't weaker than of the two other defenders, he seemed to have much problem with handling the ball and doing something intelligent ...
Brunton, Colbert and MacKeamish were ok, they stopped some passes from Costa Rica and they hadn't many giveaways. Only the passes are to inaccurate ...
Dean, Coyne and Crossley have the same problems, the final pass mostly doesn't get to the strikers ...
And the efficiency problem of our strikers we already know. Three times we hit the crossbar, other good chances were missed, the first goal was very lucky, the second a penalty shot.
Well, the tactic ... hmm ... was probably not the best choice.
To me the defense always seemed to be unsure. I placed them pretty offensive, I wanted to put them under pressure, knowing that long passes from Costa Rica could be deadly. That's why the two Def-Mids were playing, I tried to place them kind of in the wholes of the defense, so that these long passes can be stopped by these two. I think that worked pretty good.
Knowing that Costa Rica plays defensive, I wanted that Crossley and Coyne play flat (is this the right word?) passes to the strikers, who should be able to make some distance shot.
Or, the second possibility I made out was to play a high ball to one of our striker who forwards (right word) the ball with a header to the other striker.
That's why I placed them close together ...
Anyway, now I'm thinking of playing more defensive, even against weaker teams.
Let them coming and making some counter attacks probably could be more efficient.
I'll think about it, opinions are always welcomed! ;-)
Anyway, finally it was a win, that's important!

It will be hard I saw. China lose with Ecuador, but I'm so angry of it. On the pitch we were better, they score three goals after set pieces, but from play they don't have any nice situation, hard luck, but we lose and we are out MWC...
well...
the best of all was the result ;)
And Dean!
I think he played very strong, as last week.
But I would have played with another tactic, I'll write you the details, so that we might use it against other opponents ;)
But I won't play even more defensiv, definitely not.
But alltogether it wasn't a bad match and Ireland was the deserved winner.
The goals were a bit lucky but there were enough other chances...
So I'm looking forward for some good matches in future ;)

Dean messed up pretty much everything he did the first half hour. He recovered ok with some with nice passes the second half.
He was a bit too offensive I think, resulting also in 3 (unnecessary) shots ...

Congratz with another victory.
island played South Africa for the 4:th time and we got the first victory against them :D

its important to win matches where you dont do well...keep up the good job Geg :)
A win is a win :) but I wasn't a huge fan of the tactic.
The three offensive mids weren't too effective in my book, I'm not so sure tactics like this work anymore. From what I've seen this season (and this is a big hint to the rest of the Prem) the way to score goals best versus a straight 4 at the back is with a winger (or two) in line with the strikers to cross into the box. Central and deep attacks (which I relied on for a long time) are too easily snuffed out now.
Also leaving 5 players 'up' is a bit much I think. I play with 4 'up' and 6 defensive, only because of the players I have. The best setup is probably 7 behind the ball. It can still be offensive (I've had no problem in scoring goals) and you control the game a bit better.
Of course I could be talking complete tripe here ;) I'd be interested to hear what other people think.

I wasnt a huge fan either. It was well organised but it looked like it was created in pieces that didnt fit together. The 3-man defence and 2 sweeping midfielders being the main example. 5 defensive players covering the centre when the weakness with any 3 man defence is the width. That was why we didnt push them into their own half enough.
I'm not a fan of the dead centre midfielder either, for two reasons. They get in the way of passes going straight through to the forwards and secondly because passing from that position is ineffective. If you want to pass through the defence, you have to do it from an angle, otherwise
A) The pass doesnt get through the defence
B) The pass is coming from directly behind the striker so they have to stop or turn around to receive it, by which time the defender is on them.
I cant remember much about the wingers but looking at the overview, they look too deep and i dont remember them stretching Costa Rica.
If that have been a 4-5-1 and we'd been playing a much better team then it would have worked better. For this team though, i felt we didnt press them enough.

Deep wingers seem to work really well yeah. As long as I know an opponent isn't going to cover both wings I'd pretty much always play with deep wingers.
