Subject: Ireland Vs...

2007-11-17 13:24:27
The wing should have been even further out. Thanks to three errors of Scotish defs, we scored three goals.

I had Hughes and Armstrong ready for 60th minute to replace Matthews and Donegan, but only in case of draw or loosing.

Anyway, a nice win and I am very happy with the tweaks i have applied to the tactics we used last week.

Much much better and a great result. I keep going on about stretching teams and getting space and that was a good example. It helped that Scotland's defence was truly appalling and Matthews was up for it.
What you need to look at is our defence. They should never have had that much time on the ball to score. I dont think you're using our best players in their right positions yet but you're getting there. A big improvement.

i think defence worked great:)

but it was only friendly... now we must take high win vs china:)

Terry Matthews !!!

The central defender should always be the quickest so they're always there to sort out anyone who gets through. Walsh is the slowest.

Apparently they played a much weakened team

and with the highest defence. he have highest chance to get the ball, something like last line of defending.

look on other defs - they have much more field to cover than walsh, so they must be quicker than central def.
2007-11-17 14:13:23
Fair enough but i still think you need someone quicker than Walsh in the centre. He'll be outpaced by 90% of forwards.
2007-11-17 14:16:11
we need, but...

do we have?
2007-11-17 14:56:50
I'm fairly confident we do.
Looking at the database, Brunton, Hanrahan, Kukureka, Docherty, Neville, Colbert, Hulka, Deane, Lestina and possibly one of the other trainees i've not had an update on would be better options in the centre. I assume you're putting Walsh in because he has high Defending but Defending = Tackling and tackling isn't worth much if you cant get near the forward to tackle them.

walsh pace is 11... it isnt much low than others... and if we will set him good, he could be useful.

have he any mistakes today? no... so i dont see problem now. with belgium panalty was after his tackle... but it was fault of high technique of belgian att, not walsh speed.

I usually go the other way round on the pace thing- I think its better to have it at full back :) That's the beauty of a game like this I guess.

Great result Jirka- and against one of our fellow Celts as well :) Hopefully they'll have a better afternoon.

Walsh has pace 11? Not according to me. If thats true than yeah he possibly deserves his place. I'd still put Docherty in the centre though. Goals are more common through the middle of the defence and thats where i'd always put my best defender.
2007-11-17 15:43:36
10 or 11, but i think that 11, last time jirka sent me his update.

in my philosophy when we play with 5 defs, central dont need so much pace. in games with 4 defs, walsh will not have placa on first eleven.
2007-11-17 17:52:21
IMO pace is more needed on the backs, to get to the wingers very fast. central def must have higher def, and technique.
2007-11-17 21:05:59
right, as i said.
2007-11-17 21:34:13
Obviously i disagree. By having the centre back the quickest theyre first to get to any loose balls or any forwards that get through. I'd prioritise central defence over the wide positions because goals from wide are rarer and it's much easier to mark wingers. We conceded only 12 goals (25% came in one match) in 16 games last season with that system. Hardly any of them were from wide positions.
